This IPL there have been players like Suresh Raina and KL Rahul who have really given the selectors a headache with their good performances. Their good form has proven to be a huge positive for their respective sides as well, but there have been many players who were part of the Indian squad in their last assignment in the Nidhahas Trophy in Sri Lanka who have been underperforming. They have not shown why they were selected and their tremendous potential up till now. So here are 5 players who are in and out of the Indian team who have not performed up to the mark.
#5 Washington Sundar
Washington Sundar was first selected in the Indian Squad due to his impressive performance in last year’s IPL, but this year his performance is not up to the standards expected from him. In the 6 matches he has played he has taken 4 wickets at an economy of over 9.3. He was selected in the Indian Team for his tight bowling in the powerplay but this season so far has not been good.
With the bat as well he has scored a disappointing 64 runs in 5 innings. He was proving to be a perfect replacement for Ravindra Jadeja in the limited overs format but he will have to play better to bag a place in the team.
#4 Deepak Hooda
Deepak Hooda had an incredible first-class season before this year’s auction so it was not a surprise that he was picked up by SRH using the RTM card, but he too has underperformed this season. 43 runs in 4 innings are under par for a player who has a big responsibility in finishing the innings. He was part of the squad that went to Sri Lanka but did not get to play.
Although he is not really in the reckoning for a place in the full strength Indian squad he would definitely like to add his name to that list.
#3 Vijay Shankar
Vijay Shankar is a part of the rare commodity currently in India- fast bowling all-rounders. He played all the matches in the Nidhahas Trophy and even bowled 4 overs in almost all matches, but this season with Delhi Daredevils he has bowled only one over. He has finally been dropped by DD due to his bad form. Batting in the middle order in 5 matches he has scored 18 runs! That is unacceptable at this level. The captain definitely does not have enough faith in him with the ball.
A good replacement for Hardik Pandya he will have to play better than this to bag a spot in the Indian squad.
#2 Jaydev Unadkat
This season, the 11.5 cr man has not lived up to his name. In 6 matches he has taken a paltry 3 wickets at a very high economy rate of over 10 runs an over. A lot more is expected from Unadkat who was the second highest wicket-taker in last year’s IPL.
He has been a big reason why RR’s fast bowling is struggling this season. If he doesn’t improve his bowling then he will be definitely be labeled as a one season wonder but, if he does play well then he can be the third seamer in the T20 format for India.
#1 Manish Pandey
Manish Pandey is no.1 in our list because before the IPL Manish Pandey was a frontrunner for the position in the middle order at no.4, but now looking at his performances this season so far he is far off from making the Indian XI at this point. Purchased for a whopping 11 cr, he was given a huge responsibility, but he has not lived up to the mark. 142 runs in 7 matches at a strike rate of 113.6 are not worth 11cr. He is the actually the perfect player at no.4 but he has been really bad this season.
Yes, the season is far from over, but Pandey really has to pull up his game a notch, as there are many experienced players like Karthik and Raina who are clearly delivering better performances
