During the Semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup, 2003, Gilchrist tried to sweep de Silva's ball but got an edge. The ball flew off the pads and was caught by Kumar Sangakkara. Umpire Rudi Koertzen did not react to Sri Lankans' appeals, ruling that the ball had only hit the pad before popping up. Gilchrist waited for the verdict and then turned and walked back to the pavilion.
