So who are the top Indian Wicket-keepers in Test matches?
Wicket-Keepers play an important role in a match, as he has to be active throughout. For years, Indian wicket-keepers have done a great job behind the stumps. Let’s take a look through top 5 wicket keepers who played for India in tests:-
1. MS Dhoni
Not only one of the most successful captains the country has ever had, he is also the most successful wicket-keeper. He has totally taken 226 catches and has effected 37 stumpings in his career. And with a lot of Test cricket coming up for India, the numbers are sure to rise even more. He is also probably the best wicket-keeper batsman this country has seen with an average of 38 with six Test centuries.
2. Syed Kirmani
Before MS Dhoni, Syed Kirmani was India’s most successful Wicket keeper. He took 160 catches in his career and also effected 38 stumpings totally. Also, batting wise, he was considered more than just handy. He had an average of 27 and had made two Test hundreds and twelve fifties in his career with the highest score being 102. His last Test was against Australia at sydney in 1986.
3. Kiran More
Kiran More took over the gloves from Kirmani and immediately impressed everyone. His dismissals per innings ratio is at 1.444 which is bettered only by Dhoni among the top 5. He never made a Test hundred in his career, but made seven half centuries with the highest being 73.
4. Nayan Mongia
The 44 Test veteran took 99 catches and effected 9 stumpings. For a long time, he was an understudy to Kiran More. Sometimes he did deliver with the bat, but still couldn’t justify his complete potential with it. He finished with a highest Test score of 152.
5. Farokh Engineer
Probably the best Indian wicket-keeper batsman before Dhoni, Farokh had a Test average of 31 and had scored two Test tons to go with 16 fifties. He once made 94 runs before lunch on a first day during a Test. He has 66 catches and 16 stumpings to his name.
