Prior to the auction, KKR had released the Aussie pace bowling duo of Mitchell Johnson and Mitchel Starc. In the Auction for the 2019 IPL, the Knight Riders bought the experienced English all-rounder Joe Denly at a bargain price of ₹1 crore.
Prior to Russell's all-around show, Joe Denly the KKR's latest recruit achieved the same feat on the 6th of July,2018 for his side Kent against Surrey in the Vitality Blast.
Denly opened the innings for Kent and led from the front to score 102 runs off 63 balls taking Kent to a total of 173 in 20 overs. Surrey got off to a flier as Rory Burns and Ben Foakes smashed the Kent bowlers all over. Burns got dismissed on 39 off 21 balls with the score at 98 for 2 in 8.2 overs. At the end of 12 overs, Surrey was racing ahead as they needed 44 runs to win off 48 balls.
Denly had already conceded 26 runs in his 3 over spell and was set to bowl his last over. He was smashed for a 4 in his very first ball by Foakes following which he bowled a dot and conceded a single in the next ball. In his 4th ball, he got the wicket of Clarke stumped by the skipper Billings. The next ball he got Smith LBW for a duck and was on a hattrick.
In the last ball of his spell, the skipper Billings picked up another stumping as Denly became the first player to score a century and pick a hattrick in a T20 match. Denly's game-changing over and ton took Kent to a 6 run victory.
