During the 1996 World Cup semi-final between Australia and West Indies, Sri Lankan umpire Bulathsinghalage Cyril Cooray was hit on his head by a fierce sweep shot from Richie Richardson. Luckily for Cooray, he did not suffer any major injuries due to the blow.

Cooray went on to officiate in international matches until 2001, when he stood down after making a number of bad decisions in a Test match involving Sri Lanka and England at Kandy.
