In a Sheffield Shield match in Australia in 1986, former Australian batsman Dirk Wellham hit a fan on her throat as she was gatekeeping when he came out to bat after lunch.
In a match featuring New South Wales and Victoria, Wellham is said to have had a heated argument with the NSW coach Ian Redpath which led to him coming out to the crease in an aggressive manner. The angry batsman swung his bat towards the picket fence and ended up breaking the picket and hitting a lady named Barbara Carlson.

Dirk later revealed that Barbara was one his few fans in Australia. “She’s one of my fans too,” he said.
Victorian captain Dean Jones found the time to hand her a helmet the next day, so that she could protect herself the next time a cricketer attempted to do something stupid like Wellham had done.
It is uncertain wheter Wellham faced disciplinary action following the incident or not.
