Virat Kohli hit seven sixes and a further eight hits to the fence to score a blitkrieg 100 in the second ODI between India and Australia to become the fastest Indian to score a hundred in the limited-over format.
The Delhi batsman, who scored his sixteenth ton, blitzed his way to a century off just 52 balls, eclipsing Virender Sehwag’s record. Sehwag scored his century in 60 deliveries against new Zealand in Hamilton in 2009.
Kohli had come to bat at a time when India required 176 runs to win off 143 deliveries.
Post the batting carnage, Kohli said he was happy that everything he tried “came off the middle of the bat”.
He also revealed his tactic of countering Australia’s plan to bombard him with short-pitch bowling: “I wasn’t worried about the short-pitched stuff, I pulled a few of them early and then they started bowling half-volleys.”
Kohli’s ton becomes the seventh fastest century in ODI history.
This was Kohli’s 16th ODI century in 115 innings.
