The prolific right-handed Indian superstar, Virat Kohli, had a highly successful last season that stood out among the cricketing circles, to be awarded the CEAT International Cricketer of the year 2013-14.
It has be noted that Virat Kohli was also honoured with Arjuna award from the Indian government last year.
In the period between 1st May 2013 to 30th of April 2014, the former U-19 world cup winning captain has scored more international runs than anyone else which unanimously led to him winning the Cricketer of the Year Award in Mumbai during the CEAT Cricket Awards.
Kohli delivered many scinitillating performances with his bat against very good bowling attacks last season. India toured South Africa and New Zealand during the period where Kohli struck fluent hundreds and took part in the World Twenty-20 in Bangladesh where he was named the Player of the Tournament.
It appears as if he had all time in the world to read the ball delivered against him and made every bowler pay for their mistakes. He relished his battles against the best in the world – Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander, in their own backyard and fought hard for the team’s cause. He scored a century in the first innings of the Test match at the Wanderers and made a fine 96 in the second before falling to JP Duminy. That century included some breath-taking strokes and remarkable shot selection.
Virat was also part of the Champions Trophy winning team, held at England on the month of June, where India defeated the odds to lift the trophy. Virat Kohli was consistent throughout the year that reflects on his batting average of above 60 in all the formats of the game. In the ODI series against Australia later the year, Kohli smashed 344 runs in 6 matches at an average of 114.66 and strike rate of 123.29, including 2 hundreds, one of which came off 52 deliveries, the fastest by an Indian.
India, aided by the 25-year old’s captaincy went on to win the ODI series against Zimbabwe who found no answers to Virat and India’s batting that gave some insights into the Delhi lad’s ability to lead from the front.
The below table confirms that Virat Kohli was indeed the Internaional cricketer of the year.
