This game between India and Australia at Sydney unraveled in a surreal fashion. First the triple century and then the breakthrough of Tendulkar when the master was just creaming the cricket ball and with ‘that’ big milestone on the cards, suggests that this could be pertinently regarded as skipper Micheal Clarke’s match.
But to get complacent about wins is to become Un-Australian. Their entire set up, that operated a few years before, was been infected by the kind of greed that just asks for the same ‘one more’ after 2 wins, 5 wins, 16 wins. Not surprisingly for a boy who has breathed oxygen in the dressing room of the Australia whose attitude was to win – every game, every series – he had inhaled this insatiable desired too.
“We want to win the series, simple as that,” said Clarke. “We want to win every Test match we play and we would love to win this series in Perth. So we still have a lot to play for, there’s no doubt about that. We’ve won two Test matches, we haven’t won the series yet so there’s still a lot of work to go in and that starts tomorrow.”
A win here at Sydney means that India’s hopes of winning the series have already been tattered. Shane Warne has spoken about importance of celebrating success one deserves, once it arrives.
On celebrating this achievement, he said, “We definitely need to enjoy tonight and celebrate together as a team. I think we’ve played some really good cricket as a team, so I’m looking forward to celebrating that first and foremost.”
“I’ve always said you’ve got to enjoy your success as a team and tonight is going to be very special for the team firstly and for me personally as well. I’m really stoked with our performance and it’s a wonderful feeling to be able to score that many runs in one innings personally,” he added.
Asked to reflect on his own match-winning performance in front of his home crowd, Clarke said, “I can’t get the smile off my face to be honest and I look forward to sitting in that changing room for a few hours yet. It’s a huge series for this team. It’s the first series I’ve been full-time captain in Australia in front of my home fans and the Australian public so it was important I stood up.”
He lavished praise for his bowlers who’ve stripped the Indian lineup naked with their consistency and intensity.
“I think our execution was very good and I’d like to give a lot of credit to our bowlers throughout this Test match,” he said.
To dismiss a reputed batting lineup twice on a batting-beauty like this deserves a special applause.
“They continue to perform in a lot of different conditions,” Clarke added.
However, Australia will have to play without a key bowler as James Pattinson, their find of this season, who unfortunately picked up a foot injury after the second innings, will be unavailable as Australia pit themselves against India at Perth on January 13th.
