West Indies suffer innings defeat against Australia after a horrific Day 3

Australian players celebrate after clinching the 1st Test against the West Indies

Australia claimed a thumping win over West Indies in the Hobart Test by an innings and 212 runs, gunning down the West Indies second innings on the third day’s play within 36.3 overs.

The visitors were bowled out twice on a single day – they resumed Day 3 with their score at 207/6, with a mountain to climb to reach up to Australia’s score of 583 declared. The first innings was wrapped up within 16 more runs, and the visitors were forced to bat again.

Made to follow on, the second innings unfolded as a horror show for the Windies. Opener Kraigg Brathwaite, who top scored with 94, was the last man to be dismissed. He was only one of three batsmen who could reach double figures, with the next highest scorer being Jason Holder, with 17.

Josh Hazlewood picked up 7 wickets over two innings, while James Pattinson was the wrecker in chief in the second innings, with a five wicket haul. However, it was Adam Voges who was awarded with the Man of the Match award for his unbeaten knock of 269, his first double ton.

There will be a long break before the Boxing Day Test, during which time the visitors play a practice game in a bid to offer more competition than they have in the 1st Test.
