Mayank Agarwal has scored heavily in domestic cricket in all the formats. The Karnataka batsman has broken an array of domestic batting records in the last five years. His consistent runs for Karnataka and India A paved way for his selection in the Indian Test team.

In his debut series in Australia, Agarwal gave a good account of his abilities and played brilliantly against a good Australian bowling attack. He also had a decent IPL season for Kings XI Punjab.

Despite not being on the list of standby players and not having played a single ODI, Agarwal was named as a replacement player for Vijay Shankar during the World Cup. And even though Agarwal did not play in any of the games, it was a clear indication from the selectors that Agarwal was going to be their reserve opener going forward.

Unfortunately for him, Shikhar Dhawan, whose participation in the series was doubtful, was declared fit which meant there was no place for Agarwal.
