Why should Dhoni break his silence on spot fixing?

The spot fixing scandal in IPL has taken the cricketing world by storm. The news channels are having a field day with increased ad-rates. Cricket fans are feeling cheated – but then we are used to all this since the day Azhar and Jadeja were caught in match-fixing in the late 1990′s and early 2000′s. The BCCI head doesn’t want to resign, his own colleagues were silent on this until recently. Cricketers have moved on and none are discussing the spot fixing scandal. Among those cricketers is one of our favourite and our own captain – MS Dhoni.

Spot fixing is an event where a player or group of players are involved and not the entire team. Spot fixing has so far targeted players from one team and that’s Rajasthan Royals (RR). Three players are in jail and being interrogated. One Bollywood actor (or that’s what the media prefers to call him) is also being interrogated and one supposed team principal and team owner is suspected to be a part of not only spot fixing, but an even bigger crime – match fixing and betting (illegal in India, as on date). Where does Dhoni fit in all of this?

The three RR cricketers have reportedly admitted to spot fixing, but to be involved in spot fixing was their personal decision. That’s what spot fixing is all about. One player deciding to throw away 14 runs in an over has nothing to do with the team in general. Even RR’s captain Rahul Dravid was shocked at this revelation. He spoke about it in the media because it was his teammates who were responsible and as captain, you are duty-bound to clear your stand on this. Dhoni is not answerable for these players. Why should Dhoni respond to this?

MS Dhoni gets his monthly paycheck from the BCCI. Yes, he is the captain of our country but, like it or not, he is liable to BCCI. And who’s the BCCI president at the moment? Dhoni is the captain of Chennai SuperKings and the Vice President of a certain cement company. Guess who owns the team and the company? Moreover, if we remember, his boss was the only one who supported him during the 8-0 massacre in the Rest matches. Do you really think MSD will make a silly blunder of going against his own boss?

MS Dhoni not responding to spot fixing could only mean 3 things – he knows something more than what’s happening in the trial that very few of us know, he doesn’t want to discuss the controversial topic till everything is clear or he is genuinely trying to protect his players to be fresh and ready for Champions League tournament. But even these are mere speculations. If a player wants to speak on spot fixing (like Sachin Tendulkar did today), it’s either his decision or he is duty-bound (to his team/fans) to speak. As of now, Dhoni doesn’t feature in either of the category.

I feel Indian cricketers will slowly come out in the open against spot-fixing. Dhoni will come out too and talk about fixing and how it brings disrepute to the game and the country! But once again, it’s his decision and his alone. As cricket fans, we don’t need anyone to support us. We have gone through the 2000′s era and will continue to do so in this era.

If Dhoni wants to remain silent on this, let him be. We, as cricket lovers, have even bigger issues at hand. We should react to the shocking revelations by the spot-fixing cricketers and CSK team owner (current cricket enthusiast). Let’s concentrate on this rather than going after cricketers’ stance on the matter.
