Melbourne Stars captain Meg Lanning was on Sunday named the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) Player of the Tournament after turning in consistently strong performances throughout the inaugural season of the competition.

Lanning scored 560 runs off 492 balls during the event, including a high score of 90, becoming the highest run-scorer for the tournament.

She won out over an impressive field of contenders with 36 votes, beating the likes of Perth Scorchers star and England captain Charlotte Edwards (31), fellow England player and Hobart Hurricanes captain Heather Knight (28), and Sydney Sixers captain Ellyse Perry (26) for the title.

Votes are awarded on a 3-2-1 basis by the standing umpires at the end of each match -- meaning a player can receive up to six votes per match.

Sydney Thunder won the inaugural edition of the tournament at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) here on Sunday.
