Pakistan’s leading Test run-getter, Younis Khan has successfully managed to make his way into the limelight for all the wrong reasons. The 38-year-old has returned home midway from the ongoing Pakistan Cup after being involved in a series of run-ins not only with the on-field umpires but the match referee as well.
According to a PTI report, Khan was leading the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa side in this year's Pakistan Cup that is currently in progress. Nevertheless, he wasn't happy with the standard of umpiring in the tournament and after he had expressed his disappointment in one of the matches. He was reportedly summoned by the match referee, Aziz ur Rehman.
However, when Younis Khan didn't turn up, the match referee reportedly fined him, which added more fuel to the fire.
According to a source, “Younis left because he felt his reputation was being tarnished at this stage of his career and this was not acceptable to him.Younis was not happy with the standard of umpiring and when the referee summoned him for a disciplinary hearing over some remarks he had made to fourth umpire Rashid Riaz after Friday's match (which Khyber Pakhtunkhwa won) and he decided to leave the tournament in protest.”
When asked to describe the actual on-field incident that had happened, the source added, “Younis Khan first had a run-in with umpire Shozab during the match against Federal Areas Islamabad which Misbah-ul-Haq was leading.”
“In that match one appeal was turned down against Misbah and Younis was also not happy with the general standard of umpiring and when he asked the umpire why he didn't give Misbah out he got a funny reply.”
“The matter heated up when during the toss for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa game against Sindh on Friday the match referee requested Younis to go easy on the umpires. Younis, in a discussion with the fourth umpire later, gave him a piece of his mind and told him what needed to be done to improve the umpiring standards,” they added.
“The referee summoned Younis for a hearing which the senior player refused to attend after which the referee fined him 50 (to 100) percent of his match fees.”
PCB Chairman not happy with Younis Khan's actions
According to another source, “The PCB Chairman, Shaharyar Khan has taken serious notice of the incidents involving Younis Khan and has summoned a report from the match referee.”
“Shaharyar Khan is unlikely to let the matter go as he feels that no matter who the player or how senior he might be, no one can be allowed to challenge the authority of the umpires, referee or board in such a blatant manner,” he added.
