In an extremely daring manoeuvre, freeride mountain biker Kelly McGarry of New Zealand did a backflip over a 72-foot-long canyon gap at the Red Bull Rampage 2013 held in Utah from October 11-13.
The video above shows the first-person view of McGarry speeding down the drop and pulling off the splendid and thrilling backflip over the canyon gap.
The stupendous effort won him the 2nd place in the competition. He also won Red Bull People’s Choice Award after getting most votes from the fans viewing the event online.
“Last night I was freaking out, wondering if I should do it. But I had the speed, it felt right, so I just sent it,” McGarry said after the jump.
Watch his brilliant run from another angle here:
If you’re wondering what earned him only the 2nd place after such a ride, watch the run of Kyle Strait from the US, who became the first rider to win the competition twice. He won it last in 2004.
The official site states that judges announce winners based on four parameters: Fluidity and style, air and amplitude, tricks and line choice.
Kyle Strait’s winning run was extremely smooth and saw a suicidal no-hander jump off the top feature of the Oakley Icon Sender, where Kyle made a smooth jump with his hands off the bike, made judges choose the American ahead of McGarry.
Red Bull Rampage is a Diamond Event of the Freeride Mountain Bike World Tour and is considered the pinnacle of freeride mountain biking.
