It looks like EA will not be selling physical copies of its PC games in India anymore. According to reports, from now the publisher will make its 2014 releases such as FIFA 15 and The Sims 4 available via Origin and other digital storefronts only. This has been confirmed by retailers, who were told to delist their pre-orders for the disc versions of EA’s future PC releases.
This may not go so well with Indian population. Sales of physical PC games in Western markets may have declined over the years, but India still depends on the DVD because of the lack of the infrastructure necessary to make it possible to download the gigabytes of data, that too for a vast, PC-playing majority.
It is one of the many odd moves that EA have experimented with, in this region recently. Just last year, the price of PC games in India was raised by EA to match with the global price point of $60. In India, most games retail for around $16, so it obviously had severe repercussions. Twitter was buzzing with Indian gamers, protesting about the price hike. Neither was it so fruitful for EA’s sales, with retailers stating that even usual steady sellers such as Need For Speed: Rivals did not sell past their first shipment in the country.
However, if you’re untroubled by the lack of a disc to accompany your demon-slaying gambol in Dragon Age: Inquisition, you can find what you need on Origin, or Downloads4u which is, by the way, run by Milestone Interactive, EA’s India distributor.
