What are the best Commanders to come out of MTG Duskmourn? Here are our thoughts (Image via Wizards of the Coast)

There are plenty of Commanders worth using in MTG Duskmourn, but there are a few that really stand out from the rest of the pack. While previewing and pack-cracking for this set, I’ve set aside the ones that I think could either be the most impactful, or frankly, just the most fun. They serve a variety of deck archetypes, but not every Commander could be picked. A few honorable mentions are Nashi, Searcher in the Dark, The Jolly Balloon Man, and Marina Vendrell.

I’m also a huge fan of Tyvar, the Pummeler, as one of the best cards in MTG Duskmourn period. However, he didn’t quite make the cut for our favorite/best Commanders in the whole set. This is, of course, just my opinion. Your favorite Commanders/the ones you think are the best may differ.

The best Commanders in MTG Duskmourn

1) Valgavoth, Terror Eater

MTG Duskmourn’s Valgavoth, Terror Eater is still one of the best Commanders despite his 9 mana cost. That’s incredibly expensive, but what you get for it is overwhelmingly strong. A 9/9 flyer/lifelink with Ward: Sacrifice three nonland permanents means players have to pay quite a steep cost to remove him from the board via direct removal. This legendary creature also features another one of my favorite gameplay mechanics.

If a card you don’t control is put into an opponent’s graveyard from anywhere, it gets exiled instead, similar to Leyline of the Void. However, you can cast these cards during your turn, paying life instead of mana. In a mono-black deck, there are plenty of ways to gain life to cast spells, too. What an amazing MTG card! I feel like it’s going to be a real terror (eater).

2) Kona, Rescue Beastie

Another mechanic I’m really fond of in MTG is cheating cards into play faster. This makes Kona, Rescue Beastie one of the best Commanders in Duskmourn. At 4 mana, this 4/3 with Survival is a real bargain. It allows you to put a permanent from your hand into play during your second main phase if Kona is tapped for any reason.

There are so many ways to tap a creature without swinging for damage! You could play it aggressively too, but you don’t have to. You could simply cast something that has Convoke. You could combine this with say, Chord of Calling to Convoke Kona, pull a gigantic creature from your deck, and then play it at the end of the turn. Suddenly, a game-winning attack isn’t out of reach.

3) Zimone, All-Questioning

Zimone, All-Questioning is one of my favorite/least favorite Commanders in MTG Duskmourn, while also being one of the best. I don’t care for her because she involves Math, which, let’s face it, all of Magic does. But specifically Prime Numbers? Hard pass for me. However, the card does show all the Prime Numbers you could possibly need to know for this card.

During the beginning of your end step, if a land entered play under your control, and you control a Prime Number of lands, you create Primo, the Indivisible. It’s a legendary green/blue Fractcal creature, that’s a 0/0. Then, you put as many +1/+1 counters on it equal to the Prime Number in question.

Absolute madness, this. Sure, you have to keep remaking it because of the legendary rule. In a lengthy game, you could slap the Helm of the Host on one of them, to keep making non-legendary versions of Primo!

4) Marvin, Murderous Mimic

While Marvin, Murderous Mimic is one of the best MTG Commanders in Duskmourn, it does present its own challenges. Since it’s colorless, you need to have a lot of unique/legendary artifact creatures in play to really get the most out of it. That said, I think there’s a great deal of possibilities with this creature.

This 2/2 creature has all activated abilities of creatures you control, that don’t have the same name as this creature. So, depending on what you’ve got in your deck, this could be hilariously strong. You could run him with a bunch of Myr, for example, and use him to tap/untap a wide assortment of creatures, to set up infinite combos. I think it’s certainly possible.

5) The Mindskinner

My personal favorite that I’d actually run in a deck is probably The Mindskinner. One of MTG Duskmourn’s best Commanders, it’s a 10/1 that can’t be blocked. I would 100% run this with something to make it indestructible, just to avoid it being Lightning Bolted. If a source you control deals damage to an opponent, prevent that damage and each opponent mills that many cards.

This card is going to turn an entire table against you, I can promise that. This is the kind of creature you may want to run something to protect yourself with—Platinum Angel or Platinum Empyrion, perhaps. Hitting one player makes everyone mill, and that’s going to get out of hand very fast.

This is another “Hmm, maybe a Helm of the Host would be fun” kind of creature. It’s hard to beat players with mill in Commander, but with the right deck set up, I think this could get so much easier and faster.
