Tower Defense and VR seem like an unlikely combination. After all, most games in this genre require keeping a bird's-eye view of the battle and making appropriate decisions to achieve victory. However, some creative developers have managed to smoothly integrate the real-time strategic elements of tower defense with the immersion of virtual reality.
Steam’s Tower Defense Fest is on until August 5, 2024, bringing massive discounts on a vast selection of VR Tower Defense titles. If you’re searching for some new VR titles, look no further.

Five must-buy VR Tower Defense games during Steam Tower Defense Fest
1) Project RTD: Random Tower Defense VR ($8.99)
Project RTD is a tower defense title with beautiful anime-style graphics. It takes advantage of VR by introducing vertical 3D levels where you must stop the monsters from reaching the top.
You place various defense structures by rotating the tower instead of having to physically move, so this is fine to play, even if you don't have much room for movement.
The VR movement and camera controls are smooth. Additionally, this title's gameplay feels snappy, and its mechanics are deep. The game also offers a huge selection of defense towers, where each offers its own advantages and disadvantages, requiring you to think strategically about its placement.
2) The Last Day Defense VR ($9.99)
The Last Day Defense VR inclines more toward the traditional tower defense experience and focuses on the familiar top-down view for the majority of its gameplay. You still have access to all of the VR’s first-person camera movements, but it’s mostly used to deploy troops and supervise them on the battlefield.
The game features 12 upgradable towers that branch into three categories. The 25 levels may not seem like a lot, but increasing the difficulty adds new enemy types and hazards. This ensures you have enough replayability whenever you decide to ramp up the challenge.
3) Now There Be Goblins ($5.19)
Not a fan of idly watching your troop fight off enemies? Now There Be Goblins lets you jump into action and fight off Goblins with its unique approach to the genre. You do get your usual defense structures with barricades, cannons, and arrow turrets that can be upgraded thrice and repaired mid-battle.
However, this game's highlight is the arsenal of melee weapons, each with its unique ability, that lets you take the front seat during combat.
You can also pick up and throw explosive barrels, torches, and dynamite at the Goblins to keep them away or use the environment to your advantage to fend them off. Overall, Now There Be Goblins is a very creative VR game that you can purchase during the Steam Tower Defense Fest.
4) Kittypocalypse ($4.64)
In Kittypocalypse, alien creatures disguised as cute kittens have taken over the world. Despite its somewhat hilarious plot, the developers have crafted a deep strategy game with a fine-tuned difficulty curve that never feels too difficult throughout its playthrough.
You are tasked with defending the control points from evil kittens using various turrets, explosives, and lasers. This equipment is upgradable, and perks grant them increased firepower as well as new abilities.
Unfortunately, the VR functionality offers only a simple camera to move around the battlefield and deploy your troops before the round begins. That said, the virtual-reality controls are well-designed and comfortable to use for longer durations.
5) Towers and Powers ($1.69)
Tower and Powers turns you into a god where you have to save your residents from monsters and protect the island from sinking. While the game doesn’t let you jump into action like Now There Be Goblins, you can still cast destructive abilities to save your troops.
The game lets you create your team of peasants, priests, warriors, and magicians to operate the defense towers. Each character has different abilities and combining different ones leads to unique status effects on the defense towers.
The VR is interactive, and the abilities provided are simple to use. You don’t need to turn and move around physically to enjoy the game, so the experience remains quite comfortable during long gaming sessions.
