5 PlayStation 4 games that haven't aged well by today's standards
1) The Last of Us Remastered
The Last of Us was originally released for the PlayStation 3 in 2013 and later remastered for the PlayStation 4 in 2014. Even though this remaster provided players with a locked 60 FPS and a higher resolution experience on the PS4, it still feels outdated by today's standards. The graphics feel old as they are from the PS3 generation and the controls feel clunky at times as well.
Even the multiplayer mode is slowly losing its player base, which might soon make the multiplayer trophies for the game unattainable in the future. Also, the release of The Last of Us Part 1 Remake in 2022 provides players with a better experience as it features updated graphics, haptic feedback for Dual Sense, and locked 60 FPS. The remake easily replaced the remaster, making the PS4 version feel outdated.
2) Knack
Knack was released as a launch title for the PlayStation 4, which showed off the capabilities of the system at the time. The game was advertised as a big leap for the console generation as it was a technical demo for the PS4, similar to how Astro Bot is for the PlayStation 5. Even though what Knack was able to do at the time with its particle effects was incredible, it feels outdated by today's standards.
The gameplay here feels repetitive and simplistic compared to the games of today, and the particle effects have evolved since then, making Knack feel like a stepping stone more than the real deal. The gaming community often criticizes Knack for its lack of depth in its level and enemy design, which fails to engage the current mindset.
3) Infamous: Second Son
Infamous was one of the most popular PlayStation franchises on the PS3, alongside Uncharted and God of War. This is why fans were excited when Infamous: Second Son was announced exclusively for the PlayStation 4. The game came out 10 years ago and was praised for its storyline and graphics, which showcased the power of the PS4 console.
However, by today's standards, Infamous: Second Son fails to keep up with the new titles because of its empty open world that features little-to-no activities to do. After the player is done with the main story, the game doesn't offer much, whereas today's title's offer various side quests and activities.
4) The Order: 1886
The Order: 1886 is another Sony exclusive that was released only for the PlayStation 4. The game offers players a linear story with a high-quality cinematic presentation, along with graphically impressive visuals. Presentation-wise, The Order: 1886 still holds up even today as new releases often fail to deliver on cinematic presentation, an aspect that this game nails from the beginning.
However, graphics and cinematic presentation are not everything as The Order: 1886 fails to deliver on the gameplay front. The reason it hasn't aged well is because it relies heavily on quick-time events, which makes it resemble an interactive film more than a video game. The Order: 1886 is also very short in length, which doesn't give the gameplay enough time to breathe.
5) Bloodborne
Bloodborne is often regarded as one of the best souls-like games of all time by the gaming community. The atmosphere and gameplay mechanics are unlike any made by FromSoftware. Even though Bloodborne is one of the best PlayStation 4 exclusives ever released, it still fails to match up with the games of today because of their sheer scale and gameplay mechanics.
With new games like Elden Ring and Lies of P dominating the market, Bloodborne is a classic. However, it still feels outdated. The locked 30 FPS feels jarring while playing through the game, especially when today's souls-likes are targeting a locked 60 FPS for a more fluid gameplay experience. Even the controls feel clunky at times compared to the newer RPGs in the market, which makes Bloodborne feel outdated.
