5 reasons you should play Doom Eternal in 2025
1) A high-octane run-and-gun formula
Doom Eternal builds on the run-and-gun formula its godfather pioneered in 1993. This system in Doom Eternal encourages you to be constantly on the move, but its most important aspect is resource management. You can destroy an enemy in different ways to earn different rewards. Use a chainsaw to earn ammo, a flame belch for armor, and glory kill them for extra health.
This system makes it so that the player is always in control of the rewards of their skills in a game that can be really stingy with resources. Demons are also extremely tough in Eternal, thus the most effective way to defeat them is to use specific weapons and strategies. This leads to an extremely engaging, exhilarating, and satisfying combat system.
2) Diverse Locales
Doom Eternal is chock full of various locales to fight horrid demons on. Each region of the game is unique and distinct in its own way. Hell is still extremely metal with its brownish tones and demonic symbols, a destroyed Earth that still has traces of Human civilization, and the blueish tones of the other-worldly medieval Argent D'Nur, all these varied locales provide a sense of diversity.
The game also has an incredible setpiece on Mars, where you reach the planet's core by blasting a hole on its surface and descending through its flying pieces to enter your objective.
3) Incredible Soundtrack
The Doom series has been known for its amazing techo-metal soundtracks. However, Doom 2016's post-industrial, dark synth rock, djent soundtrack composed by Mick Gordon took over the world. Thus, there was much anticipation for the sequel to follow suit, and it did.
Eternal focuses much more on industrial speed metal mixed with some hard rock and djent. The game's soundtrack fits extremely well with the game's core gameplay philosophy and was a great continuation of the predecessor. Its main theme, The Only Thing They Fear Is You, became instantly famous, even becoming a meme culture mainstay.
4) Expansive DLCs
While the Doom Eternal campaign is already around 14 hours long, that is not the end of the story. Players wanting some more out of the game and don't mind the grueling bump in the difficulty can buy The Ancient Gods Part One and Part Two DLCs.
Challenges will be plenty and enemies will be tougher in this expansion. You'll need to use every bit of your arsenal to come out of the levels alive, and things will only get tougher in the second part of the game. The DLCs are definitely some of the hardest challenges you will face in the entire series.
5) Something to play while waiting for Doom The Dark Ages
One of the most exhilarating reveals during the Xbox 2024 showcase was the successor to Eternal, Doom The Dark Ages. The next entry in the franchise focuses on telling the story before Doom and Doom Eternal, set in a medieval period. While we did get the 2025 release confirmation from the trailer, the developers have not revealed the release date yet.
Players who cannot wait to get their hands on the new Doom can revisit Eternal to get their muscle memory back on track and get a refresher on the chronology of the Doom soft-reboot series.
