Five ways to improve Marvel Rivals competitive experience

1) Implementing role queue

Introducing a role queue system would ensure a balanced team composition by allowing players to select their preferred hero class before matchmaking. This approach has been effective in other hero shooters like Overwatch and promotes fair gameplay. Unfortunately, the developers have confirmed that they don't plan to implement role queueing as of now.

There are three classes in the game: Vanguard, Duelist, and Strategist, each with unique abilities. While Duelists are great damage-dealing heroes, they require Strategists for healing and Vanguards for defense and holding positions. Having a balanced composition of all three is highly recommended.

2) Adjust ranked match eligibility

Currently, players need to progress their profile to level 10 to unlock Marvel Rivals Ranked, a milestone that can be reached easily in a few hours. Raising the level requirement can help ensure that players have enough experience before entering competitive play.

For example, in Overwatch 2 you need to play at least 50 Quick Matches to unlock the Ranked mode, which gives players enough time and experience to understand the game well. Another example would be Valorant, as the 5v5 strategic hero shooter requires you to win at least 20 unranked matches to unlock the ranked mode.

3) Introduce hero bans in all ranks

Allowing teams to ban certain heroes before the match can add a strategic layer to the game, encouraging diverse team compositions. This feature prevents the overuse of particularly strong or frustrating heroes. Currently, the hero ban feature is only available for players ranked Diamond and above. However, introducing it to all the ranks would improve the gameplay significantly.

4) Enhanced matchmaking

Improving the matchmaking algorithm that queues similar skill level players and in-game behavior leads to more balanced and enjoyable matches. This is very much required, especially since the community has started to see toxicity in competitive lobbies. Considering the game is still in Season 0, an advanced algorithm will likely be introduced with the first official season.

5) Competitive rewards

Introducing competitive rewards in Marvel Rivals can significantly enhance player motivation and engagement. Offering skins, titles, and in-game currency like Chrono Tokens or Lattices for achieving specific ranks, will motivate players to improve their skills and participate actively.

For instance, players who reached Gold III or above in Season 0 were awarded Moon Knight's Golden Moonlight skin. Meanwhile, Grandmaster and Eternity rank players received Silver Crests of Honor, a collectible item that can't be applied to any hero or be used in any way.

These are some ways the competitive experience of Marvel Rivals can be improved. By implementing the above-mentioned points, NetEase Games can ensure a more balanced and enjoyable experience in a positive environment for players.
