What to know before you start Stalker 2

1) Protect your gear before the prologue ends

The opening sequence of Stalker 2 introduces you to the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, but it comes with a sneaky surprise. By the time the prologue ends, your inventory is wiped. However, you can bypass this setback with a clever trick.

Before you put the third scanner (a final prologue task), head to the nearest building, which has open windows and a safe. Here, you can store all the equipment you want to retain in the safe.

Between this point and the cutscene where your inventory is cleared, there is no fighting. Once the prologue concludes, you’ll wake up close enough to retrieve your stored items and start your journey fully equipped.

2) Grab every resource in the starting area

The early game is difficult, but it can be easier by thoroughly looting the starting area. Here are a few must-visit spots:

  • Nearby tower: Climbing this tower rewards you with essentials like food, medkits, and ammo.
  • Post office: Here, you will encounter a group of bandits in a firefight. Kill them off and assist Zhorik, the NPC inside, who will reward you with a side quest to rescue his friend, Gloomy.

Looting these areas early ensures you’re well-prepared for upcoming challenges.

3) Detour for extra loot before the Boiler House

Before going to the Boiler House to rescue Gloomy, pick up some of the good stuff in the area:

  • Zhorik's stash at the airship wreck: This stash is to the northeast of the post office and is guarded by blind dogs and radiation but is worth the loot.
  • Abandoned bus southeast of the post office: Go inside and break the boxes that contain bandages, medkits, a grenade, and a little vodka.

These items could be stocked up to make the fight at the Boiler House much easier.

4) Rescue Gloomy and explore the magnetic cave

At the Boiler House, use the cover to take out the enemies and locate Gloomy on the second floor. He's going to give you an Echo Detector as a reward.

Before leaving, head east to the north magnetic cave. From the entrance, blow open the crates with a red barrel and proceed inside the fire anomalies with your Echo Detector. This cave usually holds an artifact that will sell for a good price, even though its effects aren't worth it.

5) Make the Zalissya settlement your base of operations

Once you get to Zalissya, the first major settlement in Stalker 2, take your time and set up a good foundation:

  • Warlock's bar: A cutscene will play, advancing the main quest. Then, talk to Warlock (Kolya Plaster) to obtain the "Warlock's Debtor" side quest.
  • Hamster's shop: Hamster is your trader of choice in Zalissya. Use his shop to sell spare Echo Detectors or artifacts and stock up on medkits and ammo. His shop also includes a stash for storing gear and a bed for resting.
  • Lens the technician: Weapons can be upgraded and repaired by Lens. If your gear is in poor condition, make repairs before heading out. He also offers side quests that you can take on for extra rewards.

Zalissya is a safe haven and an essential hub for resupplying, upgrading, and planning your next move.

6) Find hidden stashes for powerful gear

The Chernobyl Exclusion Zone is full of hidden stashes that will give you a huge advantage early in the game. Here are a few not to miss:

  • North of Zalissya: Behind two houses, you’ll find a truck. Climb onto it and jump across rooftops to reach a stash with better gear, including a pistol, jacket, and ammo.
  • Northern checkpoint: At this checkpoint, look for a ladder on the tallest building. There's a Viper Monolith gun and lots of ammunition in the stash. A sniper rifle is also located inside a nearby warehouse. Even though expensive repairs might be required, the investment is worthwhile.
  • Sphere complex: Near the northwestern part of the complex, you’ll find another valuable stash. Fight or sneak past the guards to access it. This stash contains an AR16 Monolith rifle and additional ammunition.

Stalker 2 was released on November 20, 2024, for most regions. It is available on the Xbox Series X/S and PC platforms.
