While initial reactions to Batman: Arkham Shadow was skeptical because of its exclusivity as a VR title, the game has received nothing but praise from critics and fans alike. The single-player action-adventure game uses the VR medium to craft incredible combat and stealth setpieces, adding its own spin on Arkham's revered action formula.

The game puts you in the shoes of Batman, where you use your fists along with the caped crusader's various unique gadgets to take down your foes.

Beat Saber has been one of the most prominent VR games in the industry, and for good reason. The title feels like a natural evolution of music-based rhythm games. In Beat Saber, the player has to wield two glowing sabers to slice color-coded blocks representing the beats of a song. Players can also change various gameplay elements, such as speed, nature, color, and visibility.

  • Platforms: Oculus Rift, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation VR, Oculus Quest, PICO 4, Meta Quest 3

The Walking Dead franchise has had its fair share of games. While usually the best of the franchise starts with the mention of its first one, Telltale's The Walking Dead, it's usually followed by the series' first addition to VR games — The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners. The survival horror FPS brings the zombie-apocalypse fantasy to life through an incredible art design, robust physics simulation, detailed crafting mechanics, and a visceral gore system.

6) Superhot VR

  • Developer: Superhot Team
  • Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 (PSVR), Meta Quest

Superhot was already a game that had been celebrated on its original release. But its VR rendition, developed by the same team, adds a layer of immersion. While the first-person shooter follows its original gimmick — where time moves only when you move — performing various actions in VR feels incredible when successfully pulled off. As such, it has to be one of the best VR games to release in recent times.

7) Horizon: Call of the Mountain

  • Developers: Guerrilla Games, Firesprite
  • Platform: PlayStation 5 (PSVR 2)

Amongst many first-party franchises published by Sony, the Horizon franchise has cemented itself as one of the most successful. While the series was home to two mainline games and two DLCs, its third release — Horizon: Call of the Mountain — marked Horizon's foray into VR gaming. The post-apocalyptic action-adventure title follows the story of Ryas, a Shadow Carja convict trying to redeem himself by investigating a new threat to the region of Sundom.
