Metaphor ReFantazio’s Affinities act as a way to balance the power of the various elemental and physical strikes in Atlus’ new JRPG. If you’ve played any of the other MegaTen games - Persona, Shin Megami Tensei, or otherwise - you’re likely familiar with most of these. If not, think of it like any other JRPG you’ve played - enemies typically have specific strengths and weaknesses. Knowing what to use and when is one of the real keys to success in combat in this turn-based game.
However, Metaphor ReFantazio does not offer a compendium/library where you can look up enemy Affinities as you progress through the game. You can Analyze enemies in combat and see what you’ve learned, but there’s no out-of-combat method. Nonetheless, it’s a very important system - here’s what you need to know.

All bosses, like Homo Avades in Metaphor ReFantazio, have Affinities to deal with. Many enemies have at least one weakness, while others have several. Enemies can also be resistant to particular elemental/physical attacks, redirect, or even absorb these. Nothing’s worse than spending a ton of mana or HP on an attack, only to heal your opponent.
All abilities in Metaphor ReFantazio have a symbol next to them - that determines which Affinity they are. The little flame is Fire, the Ice block is Ice, the cross is Holy, and so forth. If you’ve used something an enemy is weak to before, it will read “Weak” next to the symbol, making it very clear what you should cast.
You’ll also see a notification next to enemies in battle if there are multiple enemy types on screen. If you lack the skills to take advantage of Affinities, you can also purchase/steal items that have the same effects. You can also use certain Archetypes that can force a weakness for one hit.
You’ll learn about how important Affinities are very early in the game - even as early as the Homo Fulquillo battle. This enemy is weak to Ice, but your main character (Seeker Archetype) is weak to fire - and this boss spits lots of Fire attacks. It’s a rough, but necessary lesson.
Affinities available in Metaphor ReFantazio
There are nine, technically ten Affinities in Metaphor ReFantazio. While the battle screen displays only nine, we consider Almighty to be an Affinity as well. It’s so important for your party to have a wide assortment of Affinities, to cover a wide range of bases. Every enemy in a dungeon isn’t weak to the same thing, so having a varied group is important.
Below is a list of all the Affinities available in the game. You’ll come across a wealth of enemies that have a wide variety of weaknesses and strengths.
