Champion Cards in Clash Royale were first launched with the game’s October 2021“Champion’s Update. This update introduced the first three Champions — the Skeleton King, the Golden Knight, and the Archer Queen.

Champions are more unique than other cards in Clash Royale. For starters, you can only keep one of them in your deck.

However, the biggest difference comes in the form of Champion Abilities. Champion Cards have special abilities you can activate while they are on the field, which appear on the right-hand side of the screen above your hand. You can activate them by spending the required elixir costs. You can reuse them later after a brief cooldown (as long as the Champion is on the field).

Note that due to their powerful stats and abilities, you cannot replicate Champion Cards in Clash Royale using Mirror. They will only appear in your hand when they are not in the field. Therefore, you cannot summon two of them at the same time.

To unlock Champion Cards in Clash Royale, you must reach Arena 16 - Executioner’s Kitchen in the Trophy Road (normal game mode).

You will need to gain 5,500 trophies, which can take quite a few months as a new player, depending on how often you play and your win rate.

After you unlock Champions, you will get them as random drops from various chests, like the Champion's Chest. Additionally, you can buy them from the in-game store after unlocking them to create the best Clash Royale decks.

Now that you know what Champion Cards in Clash Royale do and how to unlock them, here are all the six released so far:

1) Golden Knight

  • Elixir Cost: 4
  • Ability Cost: 1
  • Ability Cooldown: 8s
  • Unlock: Arena 16 - Executioner’s Kitchen

The Golden Knight is one of the first Champion Cards in Clash Royale that you can unlock. This ground melee troop is a buffed-up version of the Knight, with slow movement speed and moderate attack speed. He targets only one troop or building while attacking.

The Golden Knight's Champion Ability is Dashing Dash. After activating this ability, the card’s movement speed will double if there are no enemy units or towers nearby. However, if there are enemy troops or towers nearby, he'll instead dash to the nearest opponent, dealing double damage. Moreover, he’ll dash a maximum of 10 times, stopping at the 10th troop or tower.

Use this ability against hordes of smaller troops like Goblins and Skeletons to wipe them out in one go.

2) Skeleton King

  • Elixir Cost: 4
  • Ability Cost: 2
  • Ability Cooldown: 20s
  • Unlock: Arena 16 - Executioner’s Kitchen

The Skeleton King is a Giant Skeleton with a sword. He is a ground melee troop with slow movement speed and hit speed but with a ton of health. Moreover, he swings his sword to inflict damage on all ground troops in front of him, targeting multiple enemies in an arc.

The Skeleton King's Champion Ability is Soul Summoning. Once the card enters the battlefield, you get one soul for every troop you defeat (even with other units and spells).

Once you activate it, the Skeleton King will summon a Graveyard around him. This summons Skeletons one by one for every soul collected. Use this ability near the opponent's towers to quickly take them down with an army of skeletons.

3) Archer Queen

  • Elixir Cost: 5
  • Ability Cost: 1
  • Ability Cooldown: 15s
  • Unlock: Arena 17 - Royal Crypt

The Archer Queen is a buffed version of the standard Archers with a longer attack range and more HP. As a ground troop, she can attack one troop at a time, targeting flying units as well.

The Archer Queen's Champion Ability is Cloaking Cape, which allows her to become invisible for 3.5 seconds. This makes it similar to the Royal Ghost’s passive ability. Moreover, her arrows travel faster, albeit shooting them at a slow pace.

While cloaked, the Archer Queen can attack opponents. However, enemy troops and buildings cannot target her during this period (three seconds). Use Cloaking Cape to sneak past enemies and target towers directly.

4) Mighty Miner

  • Elixir Cost: 4
  • Ability Cost: 1
  • Ability Cooldown: 13s
  • Unlock: Arena 17 - Royal Crypt

The Mighty Miner is a buffed version of the Miner with a drill in his hand. However, unlike his regular variant, you cannot summon him on the enemy’s side of the field.

As a ground troop, the Mighty Miner can attack only one ground troop at a time. Moreover, his damage increases the longer he remains focused on a single troop, like the Inferno Dragon.

The Mighty Miner's Champion Ability is Explosive Escape, which lets him dig underground and pop up on the opposite lane. However, once he digs to the other lane, he will drop a bomb at the previous location. The card explodes after a second, dealing high AOE damage.

It’s best to use the bomb to defeat big troops or wait for the Mighty Miner to reach the enemy tower. When he's about to die, use the ability to drop the bomb and deal tons of damage to the tower.

5) Little Prince

  • Elixir Cost: 3
  • Ability Cost: 3
  • Ability Cooldown: 30s
  • Unlock: Arena 18 - Silent Sanctuary

The Little Prince is one of the newest Champion Cards in Clash Royale. He is a male version of the Archer. As a ground unit, he can attack only one troop at a time (targeting flying variants as well).

The Little Prince's Champion Ability is Royal Rescue. After activating it, Guardienne, his guardian knight, charges in front of him, damaging and knocking back enemies. Guardienne targets ground and air troops. Therefore, it’s best to use this ability to make Guardienne charge and attack the enemy tower.

While the tower locks in on her, the Little Prince can continue damaging the tower without getting hit.

6) Monk

  • Elixir Cost: 5
  • Ability Cost: 1
  • Ability Cooldown: 17s
  • Unlock: Arena 18 - Silent Sanctuary

The Monk is one of the most popular Champion Cards in Clash Royale. This versatile ground troop with high HP and moderate hit speed targets only one ground troop at a time. He has an interesting attack pattern, where his third hit will damage and knock back enemies.

The Monk's Champion Ability is Pensive Protection. When you activate this ability, the card gets a shield that protects him from all projectile-based and ranged attacks (arrows and bombs), as he deflects them back to the enemy.

The Monk also becomes immune to stun (Zap), slow (Freeze), and pull (Tornado) effects. However, his shield only provides an 80% damage reduction against melee attacks. It’s best to use this ability when facing fewer troops, preferably projectile-throwing troops like Bombers, Spear Goblins, Wizards, Witches, and more.

With over six Champion Cards in Clash Royale — and more to come — players have a plethora of deckbuilding options. Therefore, building decks around Champion Cards will make it easier to gain trophies and unlock all arenas.
