Elden Ring, much like FromSoftware's previous souls-like titles, offers a traditional leveling system, where your build is defined by the attributes you choose to invest points into. Although you do get to pick a starting class, which defines your playstyle for the first few hours, you eventually switch to better weapons and build as you progress through the game.

While you are locked into your starting build and attributes for the first dozen or so hours of Elden Ring, you can eventually reallocate your stat points, completely switching your build, and also playstyle. However, to respec your character, you will need to meet some prerequisites, which aren't that straightforward.

One of the resources required to reallocate your attribute points is the Larval Tears, which, much like the Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones in Elden Ring, are quite rare and available in very limited quantities per playthrough.

The prerequisites to reallocate your attribute points in Elden Ring include reaching Liurnia, making your way to Raya Lucaria Academy, and defeating the boss of the legacy dungeon - Renalla, Queen of the Full Moon. Once you defeat Renalla, you'll be given the Great Rune of the Unborn, which essentially allows the reallocation of stat points.

Similar to Dark Souls 3, reallocating your attribute points requires you to use a rare-to-find resource. However, unlike Dark Souls 3's Pale Tongue, which can be farmed endlessly, the Larval Tears in Elden Ring, are available in a very limited quantity in a single playthrough.

There are a total of 18 Larval Tears that you can find in a single playthrough, with the only way of getting more being NG+ cycles. Here are all the Larval Tear locations in Elden Ring:
