High Dragons in Dragon Age The Veilguard are massive bosses that you can find around the map. They make their appearances in certain quests. This means, unlike the previous installment in the Dragon Age franchise, you can’t simply find the dragons roaming around casually on the open map — you must participate in certain quests to get them.

1) Seartooth Vyrantis

  • Element: Fire
  • Quest: Main Storyline, also featured in Fire and Ice
  • Location: Minrathous (if chosen over Treviso in the main story)

Seartooth Vyrantis is a fierce, fire-breathing High Dragon with scales that burst with lava and flames. If players choose to protect Minrathous over Treviso, they will face Vyrantis. In the Fire and Ice quest, Vyrantis returns, this time in a duo fight alongside Corius the Icetalon.

Abilities: The dragon has devastating fire-based attacks, with explosive bursts and flaming scales that can melt armor.

2) Corius the Icetalon

  • Element: Ice
  • Quest: Main Storyline, also featured in Fire and Ice
  • Location: Treviso (if chosen over Minrathous in the main story)

Corius the Icetalon is an ice-wielding High Dragon, deployed by Ghilan’nain to capture the Dread Wolf’s dagger. It unleashes relentless ice bombs and frosty barrages. Players will face Corius if they choose to protect Treviso. This dragon reappears with Seartooth Vyrantis in the Fire and Ice quest as a duo challenge.

Abilities: Known for a brutal array of ice bombs and frigid blasts, Corius challenges players to maintain constant movement to avoid freezing.


3) Fangscorcher

  • Quest: Slaying the Fangscorcher (Taash’s companion quest line)
  • Location: Taash’s Quest area

Fangscorcher is an exceptionally aggressive fire dragon and one of the first optional dragons encountered in Taash’s quest line. It fights ferociously and tends to close distances quickly to deal with melee attacks.

Abilities: Fangscorcher’s fiery breath and close-quarters lunges make it very hard to beat. Attack its legs to bring down the stagger meter, focusing on its underside once it’s vulnerable.


4) Kataranda the Stormrider

  • Element: Lightning
  • Quest: Kataranda the Stormrider (Taash’s companion quest line)
  • Location: Rivain Coast

Known for its use of lightning, Kataranda shows high intelligence and tactical use of its environment. The dragon frequently creates lightning death traps using the shore water, testing players' agility.

Abilities: Kataranda combines lightning strikes with water traps to create zones of control. Attacking from the sides to counter the dragon’s swift movements is pretty effective.

5) Kaltenzahn

  • Element: Ice
  • Quest: Lair of the Dragon King (Taash’s companion quest line)
  • Location: Sharkmouth Caves on the Rivain coast

Kaltenzahn is an immensely powerful ice dragon found in the final quest of Taash’s storyline. Mechanically similar to Corius, Kaltenzahn is a formidable opponent, especially in its smaller arena.

Abilities: Kaltenzahn’s icy attacks are enhanced by the enclosed environment, limiting players’ movement options. It releases ice barrages and high-damage attacks that can melt your HP bar in a moment.


6) The Formless One

  • Element: Lightning and Necromancy
  • Quest: Pinnacle of the Past
  • Location: Necropolis Halls

An undead dragon, The Formless One was sealed due to its power. It combines lightning attacks with necromantic abilities, summoning undead minions to fight alongside it.

Abilities: With its lightning bolts and undead summons, The Formless One is a difficult fight. It shocks the player from a distance while its minions apply constant pressure.


7) Mythal’s Retribution

  • Element: Lightning
  • Quest: Regrets of the Dread Wolf
  • Location: Nest of the Ancients, Crossroads

Mythal herself transforms into a dragon, embodying retribution through relentless lightning attacks. This encounter is a culmination of the player’s quest to gather Solas’ memories scattered throughout the Crossroads.

Abilities: Mythal’s Retribution uses rapid lightning bolts and powerful sweeping attacks. Her lightning-based onslaught and wide-area attacks require skilled dodging and strategic use of the Crossroads terrain to survive.
