All Metaphor ReFantazio difficulty settings explored

Atlus' latest JRPG, Metaphor ReFantazio, has gained a lot of popularity in recent days. Available on PS4, PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X and S, the game takes place in the fictional United Kingdom of Euchronia and has a detailed campaign mode, along with a whole host of side content to enjoy, such as quests, optional dungeons, and boss fights to name a few.

The game also allows players to change the difficulty settings, which can range from the battles being extremely easy, to being a proper challenge. With that in mind, here is a list of all the difficulty settings available to players in-game, and the differences between each of them.

All difficulty settings in Metaphor ReFantazio

The game features five difficulty settings, and the extreme ends of the difficulty scale vary immensely from one another. Here are all the difficulty levels, and their in-game descriptions:

• Storyteller: For players who want to focus purely on the story. Battles pose no threat of death. This difficulty cannot be changed.
• Easy: For players who want to breeze through battles. This difficulty can be changed.
• Normal: The standard difficulty, where battles will thrill and challenge. This difficulty can be changed.
• Hard: For players who want intense battles. This difficulty can be changed.
• Regicide: A high-risk, high-reward mode for only battle-hardened players. This difficulty cannot be changed.

Upon starting the game, all difficulties except for Regicide mode will be available for players to choose from. As mentioned above, the difficulty mode cannot be changed, should the Storyteller or Regicide difficulties be chosen. Excluding these two modes, the difficulty can be changed at any time during gameplay using the following steps:

• Pause the game.
• Select Settings, and then navigate to System Settings.
• Scroll down till the Change Difficulty option is visible. Select it and change the difficulty to the ideal setting.

How to unlock Regicide Difficulty in Metaphor ReFantazio

Regicide is the toughest difficulty mode in Metaphor ReFantazio, and unlocking it requires for very specific criteria to be met. Firstly, it can only be unlocked once the game has been completed at least once on a lower difficulty. Secondly, the ending players achieve should be the true ending, and not the three other bad endings.

Once the above criteria have been met, Regicide difficulty can be chosen in New Game Plus mode. Do remember, however, that once chosen, this difficulty cannot be changed.
