Doom is incredibly popular among fans of the first-person shooter genre. However, in its early days, the franchise vanished from the gaming scene for a very long time before Doom (2016) revived it for another run. Ranking all modern Doom games
3) Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods Part 1 & 2 (2020-2021)
The Ancient Gods is an expansion released for Doom Eternal in two parts. It expanded on the story of Eternal, giving players a deeper look into the universe. Players got access to new enemies and bosses that they could fight in new environments, helping to increase the game's replayability.
While these additions were good, players were challenged by the difficulty, which was ramped up compared to the base game. While this gave long-time fans a fun challenge, it proved to be extremely tough for players who were new to the franchise. This also resulted in an uneven pacing, as multiple deaths took players out of the experience and hindered the story.
2) Doom Eternal (2020)
Eternal refined the combat mechanics from the 2016 entry by polishing the look and feel of combat. This entry also featured a banger soundtrack, which helped enhance the action as the player killed enemies across levels. Additionally, it had various customization options to make weapons and abilities feel more personalized.
Eternal had a vast array of gameplay mechanics concerning health, armor, and ammo that some players found too complex, resulting in frustration during playthroughs. Additionally, while the Doom titles were known for their platforming, this entry focused too heavily on that aspect.
1) Doom (2016)
This Doom entry rebooted the franchise by upgrading the gameplay mechanics and graphics for a newer audience. It brought a faster gameplay system, which required players to be quick with their actions. There were also more gory kills, which looked visually impressive thanks to the upgraded graphics.
The level design was well-crafted, allowing players to traverse through open arenas and tight corridors during combat. However, this entry's focus on the story was minimal, and the main objective was to immerse players in the combat. While the gun mechanics and platforming here are fun, some players might find the gameplay a bit repetitive after a few sessions.
Conclusion
Every Doom game has a charm of its own, which is why players are excited about the upcoming The Dark Ages. Even though the game trailer was revealed at the Xbox Showcase, it will also be playable on the PlayStation 5. As fans wait for the title to launch, they can sit back and enjoy the modern Doom games that are already available to play.
