Metaphor ReFantazio is the latest JRPG from the creators of the popular Persona franchise, Atlus and Sega. Set in the vast United Kingdom of Euchronia, the game features many RPG elements, including Status Ailments, which can affect the character's actions on the battlefield.

Status Ailments in Metaphor ReFantazio

Like other games, Status Ailments are conditions created for the player due to an enemy or a friendly character using a particular spell or item. The game has two types of Status Ailments, namely Physical Ailments and Mental Ailments. Though Physical Ailments can affect the character even after the battle has concluded, the effects of Mental Ailments wear off after battle.

Ailments can cause the character to become immobile, deal less damage with their attacks, take additional damage from enemy attacks, or even attack their ownparty members. Below is a list of every ailment in the game.

Physical Ailments

There are six types of Physical Ailments in the game, and they are as follows.

  • Poison: Poison depletes HP every time an action is taken.
  • Paralysis: The likelihood of an action failing after being selected is drastically increased.
  • Malady: Players' Strength, Magic, Endurance, Agility, and Luck are greatly reduced. Additionally, HP and MP effects are nullified, and recovery amounts become 0.
  • Hex: Hex results in half of any damage dealt, being dealt to self as well. Additionally, while afflicted, resistance to Dark is greatly reduced, with susceptibility to status ailments also being greatly increased.
  • Burn: Additional damage is taken after being attacked.
  • Frostbite: Attack damage is greatly reduced.

As mentioned previously, these Ailments can affect the characters even after the battle has concluded. Hence, it is in the player's best interest to rid the characters of these ailments as soon as possible by using recovery items.


Mental Ailments

There are seven types of Mental Ailments within the game, and they are as follows.

  • Daze: Daze greatly reduces the Hit Rate for attacks.
  • Charm: The character attacks on their own, attacking allies or even assisting enemies.
  • Forget: The affected character cannot use Archetype skills.
  • Sleep: The character cannot take any actions, and any physical attacks suffered are Critical Hits.
  • Rage: Though the character's attack power is increased, so is the amount of damage they take from enemies. All actions become normal weapon attacks.
  • Anxiety: An Ally-only ailment preventing the use of Archetype skills. If attacked while afflicted, the enemy will not consume a Turn Icon.
  • Stun: An enemy-only ailment, which prevents the character from acting for one turn when stunned.

Mental Ailments tend to be more focused on preventing characters from using their turn, and can also see them being turned against their allies. Fortunately, these ailments only last until the end of the battle. This means that should the battle be concluding soon, there is no urgency to use items or spells to rid the affected character of their ailment.
