Apex Legends introduced a new Skirmisher character, Alter, with Wraith-like abilities who can utilize portals and pass through walls. Her ability kit is quite powerful but a percentage of the community seems to be concerned about her lackluster performance in the game. Redditor u/ILewdElichika created a discussion thread and highlighted that the legend might require a buff:
“Alter needs buffs. I've been pretty much one tricking her as someone who has been a wraith die hard since the launch of the game and man Alter could be a lot better as things currently are with her. She's currently the least picked skirmisher in masters/pred and had a 0.08% pick rate in pro play."
The user had a few suggestions to resolve this issue:
"Here are my suggestions Void Vision and tactical cooldown+ should 100% be a part of her based kit, while they give her more interesting upgrades. Void passage should be around 26-28 meters instead of the current 20 meters, I feel like they were way too worried that this would break the game and there for made it intentionally weaker when it didn't really break things at all."

The post grabbed attention and raked in a lot of comments that debated over the necessity of a buff to Alter. The original poster highlighted how the legend was among the least-picked characters in the game for both competitive and ranked games in Apex Legends.
u/MouseNotHot recommended a buff to make Alter’s ultimate have infinite duration and change level-up perks to provide an increased portal range or instant teleportation without any animation to clog the process. u/B3amb00m said that it could even be a minor buff like providing the legend with two tactical ability charges and reducing the duration for each charge by half.

Redditor u/lettuce_field_theory highlighted that a buff to prevent enemies from passing through her tactical ability would be game-breaking. Alter is already strong enough with a quick relocation ability so it is important to utilize her ability kit better instead of demanding any buffs.

u/Vekaras stated that Alter has a very niche set of abilities that can only work in specific situations. The developers would face a decent number of obstacles to maintain the balance of the game while creating meaningful Alter buffs. This discussion provided insights on both sides as some players voted for a buff while others commented how it does not need any reworks. The steep skill ceiling that comes with using a complex kit requires a lot of strategy.
u/NC__Pitts supported the idea of having two tactical charges and added that the ultimate ability felt way too long because of the activation animation. If this could changed with either a buff or a level-up perk, Alter might become a more viable pick for ranked and competitive circuits.
What is Apex Legends Alter’s pick rate in Ranked and Competitive tournament matches?
Alter is currently one of the least-picked characters in the entire game — be it for a normal Ranked playlist or in competitions. The latest stats indicate that the character has around 0.08% in ALGS Year 4 Split 2 Playoffs and 1.3% in Ranked mode.
This is quite low for a Skirmisher that was recently introduced, especially considering her ability kit that can significantly increase a squad’s breaching potentially.

While a lot of Apex Legends players seem to believe that Alter can be a viable pick, her pick rates indicate that many are yet to use it in a consistent meta team composition. This has caused the community to revert to picking tried-and-tested legends like Pathfinder, Bangalore, and Lifeline.
