A recent post on X from the official Apex Legends handle announced that Respawn Entertainment and EA have collectively decided to withdraw the game's support compatibility from Linux OS. This change will not only affect PC players on said operating system, but also those who use Linux on Steam Deck to boot and play the game.

This article will shine some light on the reasons why Apex Legends' support for Linux was withdrawn.

As per the official post, Apex Legends developers have identified Linux OS as one of the main sources through which cheaters and hackers exploit the game. The "openness of the Linux operating systems" makes it a great prospect for cheaters to develop codes capable of bypassing anti-cheat software, such as EA's very own Easy Anti-Cheat.

Here's an excerpt from the developer blog regarding the matter:

"To eliminate this cheat vector, we have made the decision to prevent access to the game for Linux users. This means that Apex Legends will be unplayable immediately for those running this operating system. Playing on handhelds, such as the Steam Deck, is still possible if the user opts to install Windows."

Catching those who develop and use cheats on Linux is a difficult task. As per the article, there has been an influx of cheats from the aforementioned platform, and to prevent any further damage, the dev team has decided to block its access to the game.

This change also further affects players who use the Steam Deck with Linux to play the game. While a small section of the playerbase will suffer from this change, developers insist it will "meaningfully reduce instances of cheating in our game."

As of writing, these changes are live and if you have been operating the game through Linus OS, your access has been revoked. These changes will not affect users who play Apex via Steam, or any other official platforms. Furthermore, Steam Deck owners who want to play the game can do so by installing Windows OS on their devices.
