Apex Legends brought a lot of new weapon changes for Light Machine Guns (LMGs) in the latest Season 22 update. The official blog contains a developer note under the recent gun category changes highlighting that EA’s battle royale is going to try out a completely new direction. These changes are supposed to boost the LMG’s ability to rain down suppressive fire and defend squad positions.

A key part of the Season 22 update is the arrival of the Gun Shield Generator Hop Up. This item can be equipped on any LMG category weapon to generate a small arm shield, similar to Gibraltar, while players Aim Down Sight (ADS) with the gun. This combined with the new recoil update makes these heavy weapons more viable in gunfights.

This article will highlight whether LMGs might take over the Assault Rifle (AR) loadout meta in Apex Legends Season 22.

What makes LMGs better than ARs in Apex Legends Season 22?

The LMGs received two distinct buffs in the new seasonal update:

  • Reverse Hipfire mechanic was added to all LMGs which tightens the hipfire bullet spread the longer the weapon is fired.
  • Gun Shield Generator Hop Up was added to the game exclusive for LMGs.

The first change makes it easier to battle with opponents in close and medium range as players can shoot continuously to gain a tighter hipfire spread, essentially making recoil control easy. All ground loot LMGs provide a care package Devotion-like experience by default but feature less damage per second (DPS).

The new Hop Up is a great addition as it can compensate for the lower DPS and fire rate of LMGs by absorbing some of the incoming damage in gunfights. This can help squads hold down positions on the map for longer as the arm shield can tank the first few bullets.

ARs, in comparison, can inflict a lot more damage than the LMGs. However, the heavier weapons compensate for this with a larger magazine size that can be used to pin down squads and provide cover fire. That said, it is important to note that the reload time for machine guns is generally higher than the rifles in Apex Legends.

Conclusion

Yes, LMGs are better than ARs in Apex Legends Season 22 in several areas but fail to deliver in terms of DPS. Players would need to hit most of their shots with the LMG to achieve a faster time-to-kill compared to the raw damage output of the rifles. It is recommended to combine the LMG loadout with a movement character like Pathfinder or Octane as these heavy weapons also hinder the overall movement speed for all characters.
