Since its initial announcement at E3 2021, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora has been on everyone's mind. It was originally scheduled to be released in 2022 as a companion piece to the movie Avatar: The Way of the Water, but that date has since been postponed. The open-world first-person adventure game Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora is being created by Ubisoft's own Massive Entertainment, and from what the world has seen so far, there is still a lot to be excited about.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora plot
Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora takes place along the western frontier of Pandora, a completely new region of Pandora previously unexplored in the films, in the period of time following Avatar: The Way of Water's release but prior to the one-year time cut in the film. The western frontier setting allows the developers to include brand-new characters and creatures, but the human-run RDA continue to pose the biggest threat to the Na'vi residing there.
Expect no characters from the two Avatar films to appear in the standalone Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora story, which takes place in a brand-new region of Pandora. Ubisoft is promising to "bring to life the alluring world of Pandora with all of its beauty and danger in an immersive, open world experience."
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora gameplay
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora hasn't had much actual gameplay shown to players, but developer Massive Entertainment has described it as a first-person action adventure set in an "immersive, open world"—a Ubisoft speciality. The mounted combat and traversal scenes in the First Look trailer give players the impression that they may be able to mount Direhorses, Ikran, and other animals to quickly travel vast distances in Pandora's open world.
The world will be populated with NPCs that can carry out a variety of different actions rather than just waiting for player interaction. Alice Rendell, lead narrative realization designer, said this - "our NPCs understand the state of the world - for example, weather, player progression, or time of day".
There may have been a recent leak of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora screenshots, and if so, the game may be moving towards a more intense first-person shooter experience. Although Massive has only hinted at the combat in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, it appears that gamers will be doing everything from stalking through dense vegetation with a bow in hand to repelling RDA forces from the sky on the back of our very own Banshee.
The Western Frontier, a previously unexplored region of Pandora, will serve as the setting for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. Sebastian Lindoff, technical art director for Ubisoft, said that this will be an open world that gamers will be free to explore "from deep, dense jungles on the ground, to the grand vistas high up in the sky." Massive Entertainment, the company behind the hugely popular video games The Division and The Division 2, does have some experience in this area.
Gamers will also be allowed to visit previously unseen areas of the cinematic universe as part of this open world adventure. Frontiers of Pandora, according to Ubisoft, will enable players to "explore a living and reactive world inhabited by unique creatures and new characters" where they'll be fighting to "push back the formidable RDA forces that threaten it.

What platforms will Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora be released on?
It was officially verified that Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is going to be released for the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. It won't, however, be released on the PS4 or Xbox One, despite the fact that Ubisoft is still working to bring its upcoming games, such as Assassin's Creed Mirage and Skull and Bones, to consoles from the previous generation.
This is because Massive Entertainment threaded development through the most recent version of the new Snowdrop engine which means that the studio requires the power of the latest generation hardware in order to run a sprawling open world rendition of Pandora.
When will Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora be released?
A release date for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora has not yet been announced by Ubisoft. Many fans had anticipated that the new Avatar game would debut at the same time as Avatar: Way of the Water in December 2022, but Ubisoft has now confirmed that won't be the case. However, instead, Frontiers of Pandora is set to be released on December 7th 2023 across various platforms.
