5 best Commanders in MTG Assassin's Creed

Which Assassin's Creed characters make the best MTG Commanders? (Image via Wizards of the Coast)

While I’m not a massive Assassin’s Creed fan, I do love powerful MTG Commanders. This is as close as I’m going to get to falling in love with the series I imagine, because so many of these cards are incredible. The Universes Beyond: Assassin’s Creed packs have been out for a little while now, and so I figured I would go through the legendaries, and see which would make the best Commanders.

The power level of this set isn’t quite on par with expansions like Modern Horizons 3, but make no mistake; MTG Assassin’s Creed has some remarkable Commanders in it. I based this primarily on how I felt about the cards, and what they offer players in terms of power for the mana value you need to put it into play.

Which Assassin’s Creed characters make the best MTG Commanders?

These characters all come from the Universes Beyond: Assassin’s Creed expansion for MTG, and would all make amazing Commanders. Your uses and experiences may vary, depending on what you choose to play.

1) Sigurd, Jarl of Ravensthorpe

For 3 mana, you get such a huge amount of power from this Assassin’s Creed MTG Commander. Sigurd, Jarl of Ravensthorpe has Vigilance, Trample, Lifelink, and the Boast keyword. While it’s only a 3/3 creature, that Boast ability is what really makes it stand out. Whenever this creature attacks, you can pay 1 colorless mana. If you do, add or remove a Saga Counter from a Saga you control. Then, anytime you do that, you can put a +1/+1 counter on another creature.

If you have a Saga that’s particularly powerful, and you don’t want it to go away - for example, Wilds of Eldraine’s Three Blind Mice, you can keep it hovering between that second and third chapter, to keep making tokens of powerful creatures. This goes excellently with the Offspring mechanic added in Bloomburrow as well.

2) Leonardo da Vinci

Thopters are fun! For those who don’t know, Thopters in Magic: The Gathering are 0/2 artifact creatures with Flying. Typically, they come in for 0 mana and are used to trigger other, annoying strategies. Leonardo da Vinci in MTG Assassin’s Creed is a Commander built around that concept. After all, he did create the Ornithopter design. You can draw a card and discard one with him, and if it was an artifact, you exile it instead.

You then receive a token that’s a copy of it, only it’s also a 0/2 flying Thopter in addition to its other typing. Pair it with cards like Encroaching Mycosynth and Darksteel Forge for hilarious results. Now all your nonland permanents are artifacts, and now, all artifacts are indestructible. He can also give all Thopters +X/+X until end of turn, based on how many cards are in your hand. Suddenly, that wave of weak artifacts with wild abilities is a force of pure destruction.

3) Kassandra, Eagle Bearer

We covered Kassanda, Eagle Bearer when this set began to receive spoilers. She’s a must-have for players who enjoy ridiculous equipment decks. She can fetch her own legendary artifact, The Spear of Leonidas which is a fun piece of equipment in and of itself. You could either build up one creature, packed with equipment, or you could run lots of legendary equipment for your various aggro creatures.

Anytime a creature you control deals damage, and has a legendary piece of equipment attached, you draw a card. Suddenly, all those great buff spells and extra equipment spells are much closer to hand. She’s very flexible, and I think would be a fun creature to run as a Commander in MTG Assassin’s Creed.

4) Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad

Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad rewards you for having lots of different assassin cards in your graveyard. A three-color Commander, you can play as aggressively as you want with this deck, and it’s not going to harm you any. Whenever this creature attacks, exile an Assassin creature card from your graveyard and put a memory counter on it. Then, for each creature card in exile with one of these counters, create a tapped and attacking token copy.

These get exiled at the end of combat. However, it gives you an unstoppable, constant army of creatures such that you don’t have to worry about them being in danger. They’re always going to come back. All you need to do is run enough spells and buffs to keep your Commander alive, so you can keep doing this over and over.

5) Ezio Auditore da Firenze

Of course, Ezio Auditore de Firenze made it to this list! He’s one of the most iconic Assassin’s Creed protagonists, and one of the best Commanders in this MTG set! A 3/2 with Menace, anytime you deal combat damage to a player, your Assassin spells have Freerunning BB (two black). That means you can play Thraximundar - a 7-cost legendary assassin for two black mana!

If a player has 10 or less life, and Ezio deals combat damage to them, you can pay WUBRG (one of each color). If you do, that player immediately loses the game. What makes this such a great option is that, while it’s a black legendary card, it features all 5 colors in its text box. That makes it a 5-color card, in terms of Commander. You could easily run Magister Sphinx in this deck to set someone’s life total at 10, and immediately kill them.
