Best free-to-play games on PS5 to try out

1) Fortnite

The entry of Fortnite in this list should come as little surprise, as it is simply one of the finest free-to-play games on PS5. Despite the decline in the popularity of the battle royale genre, Epic Games' 2017 hit still sees a huge number of players tearing themselves up to get the Victory Royale.

If the battle royale mode is not for you, worry not as there are quite a few other gameplay modes and PvE options to keep you engaged.

2) Apex Legends

Apex Legends is one of the biggest free multiplayer games and for good reasons. Like Fortnite, Apex has a considerable player count every month competing in the game's various maps to achieve victory. Apex's BR system is unique as you'll need to coordinate with your team as each character has special abilities.

This makes it an incredible free-to-play multiplayer game to hop in with your buddies and try to snatch that victory by eliminating the last squad. Like Fortnite, Apex offers a few game modes if you don't enjoy the battle royale.

3) Call of Duty Warzone

Warzone is another battle royale that stood the test of time and sees a huge chunk of players ready to bunny hop and shoot each other with anything from grenade launchers to rifles while avoiding the lethal gas reducing the arena's size.

The game will get another massive content update when Call of Duty Black Ops: Gulf War drops in a few months, and will see a massive influx of players.

4) Overwatch 2

Blizzard Entertainment has certainly made a few fumbles along the way, but no one can argue about the fact that a certain charm pulls you back to the game at times. Overwatch 2 is your simple hero shooter; you build a squad with tanks, DPS, and healers and face an opposing team in an objective-based gameplay loop.

There are even talks of returning the classic 6v6 game mode, which was removed in favor of a 5v5 system that most of the community disliked. It is one of the best free-to-play games on PS5, which can be extremely fun if played alongside friends.

5) Genshin Impact

Not many free games offer a narrative so diverse and well-written as HoYoverse's Genshin Impact. The title has received critical acclamation for its eloquent storytelling, fun combat, and a vast open world to explore with several regions based on various real-life countries.

It is simply one of the best free-to-play games on PS5 that you can try out, especially with the upcoming region of Natlan in Genshin Impact.

6) Honkai Star Rail

Following its sister's footsteps, Honkai Star Rail is also one of the best free-to-play games on PS5 that you should try out in August 2024. Where Genshin Impact offers an open-world experience, Star Rail offers one of the classic JRPGs with turn-based combat, small explorable open environments, and epic boss battles.

Try Honkai Star Rail if you enjoy RPGs like Persona, Shin Megami Tensei, and Final Fantasy.

7) Zenless Zone Zero

Another game on this list of best free-to-play games on PS5 is another HoYoverse title. The newest offering from the company is yet another narrative experience with combat inspired by fighting games.

However, keep in mind that Zenless Zone Zero offers more of a narrative experience than Honkai Star Rail and Genshin Impact, so don't dive into the game thinking that you can always get into intense combat.

8) Warframe

If multiplayer games are not your forte, the PS5 also offers a few narrative-driven titles. Warframe is one of them, featuring an intriguing plot that will keep you hooked tied with a fun fast-paced combat loop.

If the fast-paced hack-and-slash gameplay where you shoot and cut your way through aliens is not your jam, there is always the ability to play various songs with your fellow Tenno.

9) Astro's Playroom

Astro's Playroom is yet another excellent offering when it comes to free-to-play games on PS5. You will take on the role of the cute little Astro Bot and venture into a 3D platformer world full of puzzles. It is simply a great game to kill time and relax.

It might be a great time to play Astro's Playroom as the next game, Astro Bot's release date of September 6, 2024, is just around the corner.

10) Brawlhalla

Brawlhalla is one of the best free-to-play games on PS5 for fans of fighting titles. Taking a book out of Nintendo's Super Smash Bros franchise, this game features you picking various heroes with different abilities and trying to knock off enemies using various combos to be victorious.

Smash enthusiasts, if you feel like throwing your opponents off the fighting arena and getting the epic win but own a PS5, try out Brawlhalla instead.
