Resident Evil is one of the most iconic and beloved franchises in horror game history. Since its inception, the franchise has been pioneering the genre. Having been around for a long time, the franchise has spawned numerous Resident Evil mainline titles as well as a plethora of spinoffs.
While the mainline games follow a pre-established formula, Resident Evil Spinoff titles introduce new systems and gameplay mechanics to the classic franchise to mix things up. Thanks to the worldwide popularity of the series, there are a ton of Resident Evil spinoff games. In this article, we have listed some of the best among them.
5 Best Resident Evil Spinoff Games
1) Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles

Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles reveals Leon's activities between killing zombies in Raccoon City and dealing with cult leaders in Europe. The Darkside Chronicles shines a light on his mission to investigate the viral nightmare brewing in South America alongside his commanding officer, Jack Krauser. This fan-favorite bridges a crucial story gap that even the Resident Evil 4 remake refers to.
Darkside Chronicles featured co-op gameplay, which was quite new in the RE franchise. Although the game was released back in 2007, the graphics are crisp and visually pleasing.
2) Resident Evil Revelations
Revelations brought back the bone-chilling survival horror vibes that fans were craving after the series turned into an action zombie game instead of horror. It featured slower pacing, head-scratching puzzles, and a nifty scanning gimmick that helps you with the backstories of various items, NPCs, and more.
That being said, the plot of Revelations is a bit all over the place, centering around yet another ill-fated ocean liner tied to a city getting decimated by B.O.W.s (bioweapons for the uninitiated). The gameplay lacks innovations or experimentation. Despite all this, Resident Evil Revelations still has much to offer to players looking to enjoy a classically scary experience.
3) Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City
On paper, the idea of controlling an Umbrella strike team mopping up the mess in Raccoon City sounded like a co-op dream. Sadly, the execution was about as clean as a zombie's hygiene. In Bullet Sponge Enemies, a forgettable non-canon story, the main appeal was fighting big bads like Nemesis with friends.
Although the game had many flaws, it still deserves a spot on this list because it experiments with the classic RE formula. It was one of the first games that revealed the franchise's potential in the co-op or multiplayer genre.
4) Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles
If you've ever wanted to see the evil Umbrella Corp get its long-overdue comeuppance, this light gun shooter would be a great pick for you. Bridging the events between Code Veronica and RE5, it brilliantly utilized the Wii's motion controls for various maneuvers that just felt right. The game featured the much-sought-after destruction of the Umbrella Corp mission.
The Umbrella Chronicles is more of an action game than a horror one. It throws waves of zombies in your face. You will need to mow them down by raining bullets. This title is considered one of the best modern light gun games.
5) Resident Evil Outbreak
Resident Evil Outbreak is by far one of the best RE spinoffs of all time for me. This ambitious online title for the PS2 had players using emotes and gestures before it was a norm. The main attraction and the brilliance of this title was that, in this game, you don’t play as trained military officers or secret agents, but as regular Joes trying to survive the Raccoon City outbreak.
The only flaw in this title is that it is only available on the PS2, with graphics that require an update desperately and no online support. Fans are disappointed that despite the numerous remakes and spinoffs in the series, Capcom has yet to consider creating a modern version of this title.
