With Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO setting the stage for the next entry in the acclaimed Budokai Tenkaichi series of fighting games, fans are hotly awaiting the upcoming title in the iconic Shonen Jump series. Publisher Bandai Namco has confirmed that the game will be making its way to gamers later this month, but what about last-gen users?

While multiplatform trends are shrinking, PS4 and Xbox One consoles have massive install bases, so some games still make it over to those platforms. This is also true of the popular Nintendo Switch hybrid console. Is the game on these systems as well? Unfortunately, Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO will only be released for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S systems.

Developed by Danganrompa developer Spike Chunsoft, Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO will utilize the most out of the latest generation of gaming hardware to provide the most spectacular and flashiest fights of any game in the series.

This is evident thanks to the ample gameplay showcases conducted by the publisher, highlighting massive upgrades to the Budokai Tenkaichi formula. As an example, the fighting arenas are much larger than ever before and even allow weather that changes instantly upon charging Ki to demonstrate the power of the superhuman characters that players control.

From massive, destructible environments, to tons of effects on-screen at a blazingly fast pace, all the elements are designed to take advantage of the current-gen consoles and mid- to high-end PCs. As such, the studio's vision would not be technically feasible on PS4 or Xbox One, and certainly not the less powerful Nintendo Switch.

This is certainly a bummer for PS4 and Xbox One owners who have been looking forward to the game since 2007's Budokai Tenkaichi 3 on the PS2 and Nintendo Wii. It was also the last entry in the series to be released on a Nintendo platform. Switch fans should keep their fingers crossed and hope that Bandai Namco ports the upcoming entry to the next-gen Nintendo Switch 2.

Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO launches on October 11, 2024, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S platforms.
