In a recent tweet made on X from the official Witchergame handle, CD Projekt Red congratulates Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree for beating out The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine's eight-year streak for being the best expansion to a Role Playing Game. Blood and Wine is the second and final expansion of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It was announced on April 7th, 2015, alongside the Hearts of Stone expansion, and was published on May 31, 2016, for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

The expansion follows Geralt of Rivia as he travels to Toussaint in search of a mystery beast that has been terrorizing the land. Critics praised this expansion, as it won several prizes for the way CD Projekt Red ended the plotline of the character Geralt of Rivia. Many considered it to be one of the greatest downloadable content packs of all time. That is until Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree came out on June 21, 2024.

In this article, we shall take a look at how Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree dethroned The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine's long-reigning crown of the best expansion for a Role-Playing Game.

FromSoftware has gone out and published one of their arguably best works with Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. It became a new benchmark in both the genres of Soulslike and Role-Playing games. From level design to challenging boss encounters that will make you struggle, FromSoftware has earned praise from the player base as well as critics for its newest expansion according to Metacritic Scores.

It is however a massive feat to dethrone a game that had the crown of the best expansion to a Role-Playing game for almost eight years. The Blood and Wine expansion introduced new characters, hazardous creatures, new armor, weapons, and a fresh Gwent deck of cards. It also included a new gameplay mechanic alongside Mutations. The expansion featured more than 90 new quests, over 30 hours of new adventures, about 14000 new lines of dialogue, 20 new monsters, 30 new weapons, and so on.

Just the sheer number of new additions that came with the Blood and Wine expansion were impressive. This makes the fact that Shadow of the Erdtree surpassed it eight years later nothing less than a feat. The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine devs at CD Projekt Red took to X platform to congratulate FromSoftware and Shadow of the Erdtree for this achievement, and fans are more than merry to see two of the most reputed Role-Playing game publishers recognize the effort being put into such well-received titles.
