Capcom's team is bringing back the nightmarish experience of 1996's classic Resident Evil title with a PC release. The original game was launched for consoles, and it was never actually made for PCs. Alongside Resident Evil 1, the original RE2 and RE3 games in the survival-horror franchise are also coming to PC. However, there's an unpleasant update for Steam users as the remake will not come to the platform. More on that later.

The classic Resident Evil trilogy is still popular among many fans. Its re-release will offer new gamers a chance to experience the uncut horrors of the original titles that revolutionized the survival-horror genre.

Original Resident Evil trilogy on PC to be available on GOG, but not Steam

GOG, the online digital distribution retailer, recently announced that the original Resident Evil 1 from 1996, along with RE2 and RE3, is coming to PC. While RE1 is already available for purchase on GOG's website, release dates for the second and third installments will be shared at a later date. This news was also revealed by the official page of Capcom's series on X.

Sadly, all three titles will be exclusively available via GOG. Players using Steam as their preferred storefront to buy video games on PC won't be able to purchase the classic trilogy. However, they can just make an account on GOG's website in case they don't mind having two launchers on their systems to buy and enjoy PC titles.

Speaking more of the GOG version of Resident Evil 1, it's going to feature fully uncensored content. Interestingly, the original version launched for PS1 consoles more than two decades ago had a lot of restricted elements in showing horror-based violence and other intense scenes.

It won't be the case with RE1's DRM-free PC port which is great news for fans who want to enjoy an uncut and gory experience.

Below are some of the most highlighted features coming with the re-release of 1996's RE1 on PC:

  • Full compatibility with Windows 10 and Windows 11
  • All 4 localizations included (English, German, Japanese, French)
  • Enhanced DirectX game renderer
  • Improved timing of cutscenes
  • Improved game video player
  • Improved game registry settings
  • Full support for modern controllers (Sony DualSense, Sony DualShock4, Microsoft Xbox Series, Microsoft Xbox One, Microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch, Logitech F series and more)
