Dark Souls receives Steamworks update

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition migrates from GFWL to Steamworks

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition players can now transfer their Dark Souls save data and achievements from Games For Windows Live to Steamworks. From Software has announced that the new update for Dark Souls: Prepare To Die Edition will replace GFWL (Games For Windows Live) with Steamworks and joins other developers who have made the transition.

As of now, the update is only optional, as players have until February 16th to transfer their game saves and achievements. However, the new version of the game, using Steamworks, will become the default version and all save data and achievements will be lost if they haven’t been transferred before the given date.

From Software has posted instructions on how to transfer the game’s data to Steamworks for both digital and physical copies of the game. If you're launching Dark Souls for the first time, just enable the Beta in the game's properties menu and you'll be able to pretend that GFWL was never a part of the game.

Unfortunately, there have been issues experienced by some players who have mods, such as DSfix, installed. However, a new version of the mod is available now, which will hopefully address these issues.

The update will become mandatory on 16 February.
