Yes Fenrir does die in God of War Ragnarok but he is brought back to life by Atreus.

Proceed at your own risk, because while God of War Ragnarok signals the end of the Norse story for Kratos and Atreus, the series' destiny remains unknown, despite fans and critics being pleased with a superb and fitting conclusion. Throughout the first game, indications were dropped about the big wolves who would aid the father-son combo in their fight against Odin and his army; however, one wolf who lingered in the shadows was the magnificent wolf Fenrir.

Fenrir is important in mythology as the cause of Odin's ultimate death, although his role is decreased in God of War Ragnarok, mostly to allow Kratos and Atreus to fight the last battle.

Disclaimer: This article will contain details revolving around Fenrir and God of War Ragnarok and will contain spoilers for the game. Readers are advised to proceed at their own discretion.

Who is Fenrir in God of War Ragnarok?

In God of War Ragnarok, Fenrir is the ageing and sickly wolf of Atreus and Kratos. He was found by the father and son duo alongside Speki and Svanna although Fenrir was already quite old by then. Yet despite that Atreus believed he would survive although that wasn’t the case as Fenrir’s health continued to deteriorate although Atreus was there to comfort him in his final moments. That was when he accidentally transfers Fenrir’s soul to his knife after his death.

In Norse mythology, Fenrir is one of three children of Loki and the female Jötunn Angrboa, the other two being Hel and Jormungandr. They were all born in Jotunheim but were transported to Asgard by the Aesir gods. This was due to the Gods' belief that the trio were really the three siblings who would bring great calamity upon the Gods due to the nature of both of their parents, particularly their father Loki.

During Ragnarok, it is believed that Fenrir will break free from the chains that link him to Asgard and would fight and slay Odin.

How Did Fenrir Die in God of War Ragnarok?

Fenrir died of old age in God of War Ragnarok as by the time Kratos and Atreus found the wolf, he was already said to be very old with his age leaving him in poor health. However, Atreus sincerely felt that with enough care and effort, Fenrir's health would improve, but Fenrir's health would only worsen until he died.

Does Fenrir come back to life in God of War Ragnarok?

Yes, Fenrir does come back to life in God of War Ragnarok. This is because after Atreus accidentally transfers Fenrir’s soul into his knife, only Angrboda realises when he visits her in Ironwood. However while she tells him that there is a soul in his knife, she doesn’t tell him the identity of the soul as she believed that Atreus would figure it out eventually.

That happened when Kratos and Atreus were battling Garm in Helheim, with the latter using his knife to strike the Wolf-Giant and then he uttered a spell to transfer the soul from his knife to the being. Fenrir, terrified and perplexed, would flee, until Kratos and Atreus discovered him whimpering in a cave.

Fenrir appeared after Atreus calmed him down, gently licking Atreus and obeying Kratos' command to sit. Atreus eventually entrusted Fenrir's ownership and care to Angrboda, who was better equipped to care for the now-giant wolf.
