Dota 2 TI 2024: All unpicked and unbanned heroes

TI 2024, the 13th iteration of the annual Dota 2 tournament, had 25 unpicked heroes. This is the highest number of unpicked heroes in any TI ever thus far, with TI 3 (2013) coming in as a close second with 24. Usually, this is reflective of a long-cemented aura meta. Even though top 'overpowered' picks like Windranger got figured out by the end of the tournament, this TI was not nearly long enough for that meta to evolve.

In this list, we'll take a look at all the Dota 2 heroes that went both unpicked and unbanned in TI 13.

There were a total of 25 unpicked heroes in TI 13 in the Main Stage and Group Stage combined. However, four of these were banned at least once, leaving 21 that went untouched throughout the course of the tournament:

  • Arc Warden: Games went by too fast for a late bloomer like Arc Warden.
  • Bloodseeker: With the high reliance on saves and/or healing supports, it makes sense Bloodseeker went ignored.
  • Bounty Hunter: Bounty Hunter is a riskier Nyx without an Impale when it comes to these professional games.
  • Dawnbreaker: As a core, Dawnbreaker's kit is not at a good stage to pick other than extremely niche cases that did not arrive. It also doesn't help that Enigma is not meta.
  • Juggernaut: Considered to be one of the weakest Agility carries right now.
  • Legion Commander: Over-reliance on pickoffs in a meta where heroes do not split that often.
  • Lich: Does not counter any of the meta carries or offlanes.
  • Lifestealer: In the same ditch as Juggernaut, but might have been picked if the tournament was longer.
  • Necrophos: Not in a good state and does not particularly counter any meta picks.
  • Ogre Magi: Skill issue.
  • Outworld Destroyer: Might have come out once in a while in a Bo3 tiebraker, which was in short supply in this TI.
  • Phantom Lancer: Needs no elaboration.
  • Pudge: After a good few tournaments, Pudge is back on the bench again.
  • Shadow Shaman: Lion was almost never banned, even against specialists like Vitalie "Save-" Melnic.
  • Silencer: Generally only gets picked against a meta full of Dawnbreakers and Enigmas.
  • Techies: Good riddance, thank you Icefrog.
  • Tidehunter: We're just as surprised as you are.
  • Vengeful Spirit: We're surprised yet again.
  • Venomancer: Only if Topson got to play the final...
  • Warlock
  • Witch Doctor

A good chunk of this list comprises melee Agility-based cores, which makes sense given how ranged carries are in high demand in Dota 2. On the other hand, there are some surprising inclusions that we all expect in a TI: Tidehunter and Warlock come to mind.

A big thing to consider here is how the Group Stage concluded in less than a 100 total matches, which is half as long as the average TI.

The following four heroes were also never picked, but banned at least once:

  • Anti-Mage
  • Axe
  • Death Prophet
  • Meepo
