Elden Ring's upcoming DLC is less than two weeks away from its release. Naturally, it's the best time to get your builds and base game saves prepared for the DLC so that you can jump straight into Shadows of the Erdtree when it comes out on June 21, 2024. However, much like previous FromSoftware DLCs, accessing Shadows of the Erdtree comes with its fair share of prerequisites, one of which is defeating Mohg, Lord of Blood.

Mohg, however, is not a boss you can find simply by following the main questline of Elden Ring. Instead, he's one of the optional Remembrance bosses, akin to the likes of Rykard, Astel, and even Malenia. As such, it's quite likely that a majority of players haven't even found Mohg, Lord of Blood, let alone defeated him.

Thankfully, if you're thorough with your exploration of the opening regions of Limgrave and Liurnia, you can get access to Mohg's hidden Mohgwyn Dynasty pretty early in the game. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to find, and defeat Mohg, Lord of Blood in preparation for Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree.

Where to find Mohg, Lord of Blood in Elden Ring?

Reaching Mohg entails the Tarnished making their way to the Mohgwyn Dynasty, a place that's hidden deep within the bounds of the Cosecrated Snowfields. The Mohgwyn Dynasty is only accessible either through allegiance to Lord of Blood or via the teleportation device hidden deep within the Consecrated Snowfields, which in itself is a hidden region.

You're technically meant to arrive at Mohgwyn Dynasty pretty late in Elden Ring, just before you head to Miquella's Haligtree. However, if you want to get access to Moghwyn Dynasty early, there's also a way to do so, simply by completing White Mask Varre's questline.

Completing the first half of Varre's questline rewards you with the Pureblood Knight's Medal, which you can immediately use to teleport over to the Mohgwyn Dynasty. What's even better is that you can complete the first half of Varre's questline as soon as you arrive at Liurnia.

However, do note that the Moghwyn Dynasty and Mohg, Lord of Blood still constitute end-game content, and hence, even the most basic of enemies there, i.e., the Albinaurics, can easily kill you. It's best to leave Mohgwyn Dynasty and Mohg for when you organically arrive at the Consecrated Snowfield and have an end-game build.

Additionally, completing Varre's questline requires you to play the game in online mode, since you will need to invade other players' worlds as a Bloody Finger.

How to defeat Mohg, Lord of Blood in Elden Ring?

Although Mohg might be intimidating at first, defeating him is pretty easy, as long as you have a good enough build for the boss fight. While I will recommend using a Bleed build since that's what I found to be the most effective against this boss, you can technically go with any build that you like and that suits our preferred playstyle.

Mohg has a very high resistance to fire-elemental attacks and spells but is incredibly weak to other elements. Additionally, similar to most end-game Remembrance bosses in Elden Ring, Mohg has two very distinct phases, where he transforms into a much more powerful form once his health drops below 75%.

Apart from Mohg's blood-flame-based attacks and spells, he has a very unique mechanic where once he drops below 75% HP, he starts placing the Tarnished under a blood incantation, which leeches their maximum health and ends up healing him. To counter this mechanic, you must heal as soon as Mohg screams "Nihil."

If you time your heals right, you shouldn't have to use more than three Crimson Tear Flasks. However, not healing on time can result in you losing the battle long before you get to see Mohg's second phase. There's another way to avoid Mohg's blood incantation, i.e., by using the Purifying Crystal Tear, which you get by completing Yura's questline.

The Purifying Crystal Tear negates Mohg's incantations effects entirely, saving you those three Crimson Tear Flasks, and also allowing you to deal damage to the boss while he transitions to his second phase. Once Mohg is defeated, you will be rewarded with 420,000 runes, Remembrance of the Blood Lord, and Mohg's Great Rune.

Defeating Mohg, Lord of Blood also makes sure that you're ready for Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. Much like how Sister Friede's boss arena served as the entrance to The Ringed City DLC in Dark Souls 3, Mohg's arena in the Moghwyn Palace serves as the entrance to the Shadow Realm, i.e., Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.
