Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree features several new enemy types and bosses. Among them, the Furnace Golem is easily one of the most intriguing additions to Elden Ring's boss fight roster. Although the Furnace Golems don't technically have a boss health bar, the way you encounter and defeat them is reminiscent of the overworld bosses in the base game.

The Furnace Golems are essentially a mix of the roaming giants and the Erdtree Avatar enemy types from Elden Ring's base game. However, unlike those two, dealing with this new entity is a much more arduous task that requires you to have a strong enough build and knowledge of its weaknesses.

Here's a comprehensive guide on how to easily defeat the Furnace Golems in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.

The first thing to note about the Furnace Golems is that they are highly resistant to almost all forms of damage types, regardless of your base attack power. Even with a level 180 Strength-Faith build, with a fully upgraded Blasphemous Blade, I was barely doing any damage. I even tried buffing my attack with Incantations but to no avail.

On the other hand, the boss was dealing enough damage to basically one-shot me, even with my character's Vigor stat being at 55, and Morgott's Great Rune active. It's quite clear that the Furnace Golems aren't meant to be fought right from the get-go, like the Tree Sentinel in the base game.

However, if you are persistent enough, you can actually take down the foe, albeit after a long and infuriating battle. Here are a few tips that should help you defeat the Furnace Golems in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree:

  • Make sure you have a high DPS weapon, blunt weapons are preferred. Although you can technically take down the boss with smaller weapons, they won't deal enough damage to break its poise fast enough.
  • The battle against the Furnace Golem is all about knowing when to strike and when to dodge. Don't go for more than three hits at a time to maintain enough stamina to dodge its AOE attacks.
  • Torrent is crucial for this boss fight. While you can try to do the battle without it, the fight will be much harder than it already is.
  • The trick to actually dealing damage to Furnace Golems is to do a critical attack. However, to land one on these giant bosses, you first need to break their posture, which you can do by dealing damage to their feet.
  • The Furnace Golem mostly uses AOE attacks that need to be dodged by jumping. You can try to outrun the AOE, but that'll cost way more stamina and won't let you retaliate instantly.
  • Dodging the Golem's fire stomps is quite easy, just use Torrent's double-jump ability right before the AOE starts. I highly recommend keeping a lock on one of the Golem's feet.
  • After you deplete roughly a quarter of the Furnace Golem's health bar, it will fall to the ground, allowing you to deal a critical attack to its head (marked by a "Sun" emblem).

Ideally, you need to perform two critical attacks to defeat the Golem, but if you're using a low-DPS weapon, it may require more. The battle against the Furnace Golem is much like the one against Malenia or even Mohg, Lord of Blood, where you need to keep an eye out for an opening while ensuring you keep your defensive measures ready.
