EWC 2024 Week 1 Recap: T1 and Team Falcons victory, MLBB group stage, and Dota 2 Riyadh Masters

Week 1 of the Esports World Cup 2024 or EWC 2024 has concluded and some surprising results have come out of it. Both T1 and Team Falcons made their mark on their respective stages in League of Legends and Warzone. The MLBB group stage bore unexpected results, with Fnatic ONIC failing to make it to the playoff stage. Meanwhile, in the Riyadh Masters play-ins, Blacklist International surprisingly defeated several major teams.

For those who missed the action from Week 1 of EWC 2024, here are the highlights.

In the first-ever million-dollar MLBB tournament, 16 teams from different parts of the world took part in the group stage. Indonesian squad Fnatic ONIC were expected to make it to the playoff stage, but that was not to be. Instead, See You Soon and Fire Flux Esports, from Cambodia and Turkey, respectively, progressed to the next stage.

At the League of Legends Esports World Cup Invitational, eight of the best LoL teams from around the world competed in Riyadh. Teams from North America, Europe, China, and South Asia battled it out for four days before China's Top Esports and South Korea's T1 faced each other in the Grand Final.

T1 came out on top with a 3-1 victory, adding one more trophy to their collection.


Dota 2 Riyadh Masters

At the play-in stage of Dota 2 Riyadh Masters 2024, Filipino team Blacklist International defeated several powerhouses, including China's LDG gaming, G2 x iG, and the European team Virtus.pro 2-0. Despite suffering a 0-2 loss against Entity, the squad is guaranteed a group-stage spot.

As of now, four teams, Virtus.pro, nouns, G2 x iG, and Azure Ray, have been eliminated from the competition.

Warzone Cup

Team Falcons won the Call of Duty Warzone tournament at EWC 2024. They took home 1,000 club points as well as a cash prize of $200,000. They finished with 255.2 points, with the second-placed team, Team Abwizz, trailing by nearly 100 points.

Team Falcons were head and shoulders above their competitors in the finals and became the first team to secure a trophy at EWC 2024.
