What's the story?

The publishers of FIFA 18, EA Sports, have released a new Lionel Messi Ultimate Team (FUT) card that gives the Barcelona great a better card than his original FIFA 18 overall card. Messi, in the process, is ranked higher than FIFA 18's top player Cristiano Ronaldo on the ever-reliable Futhead.com.

In case you didn't know...

FIFA Ultimate Team is an online game mode where players can compete with opponents by building their own teams of star players. EA Sports also release a weekly list of top FUT players with upgraded cards and this week's selection has the in-form Messi head the queue.

The heart of the matter

Messi's 94-rated FUT 18 card is better than his original 93-rated FIFA 18 card and that makes him among the top players in the game right now. The FUT Team of the Week is constantly changing so this might not be the best Messi card in FIFA 18 yet.

The Argentine maestro is joined by Alvaro Morata, Stephane El Shaarawy, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Yacine Brahimi, David Silva, Hilton, Cesar Azpilicueta, Faouzi Ghoulam and Antonio Adan in this week's FUT XI.

While Messi's 94-rated card will not be seen in other modes of FIFA 18 when it hits the stores tomorrow, Ronaldo's slow start to the 2017-18 season means that the Real Madrid superstar has been temporarily overtaken by Messi, at least in FUT.

What's next?

FIFA 18 is all set for its big release tomorrow and it will be Ronaldo, not Messi, who will grace the worldwide covers of EA Sports' flagship label.

Author's take

Although Messi is currently is hot form, his FUT card of 94 is the best ever so far in FIFA 18, apart from Antoine Griezmann and Michy Batshuayi's pro-player cards. Both Griezmann and Batshuayi were handed 99-rated cards last week but it is Messi's rise above Ronaldo that is making all the noises ahead of tomorrow's big day.
