"Prefab" is the shortened version of the term "Prefabricated building part". In Frostpunk 2, this essential resource is needed to make buildings, districts, and even hubs. At the start of each game, you will receive a certain amount of Prefabs, but you will need a lot to progress to the advanced stages.

One of the primary ways to obtain Prefabs is by building Extraction or Industrial Districts on special resource nodes. These nodes are remnants of the old world, often buried beneath layers of ice, and can be located using the Materials overlay (press "5" on your keyboard). Upon finding these, you must decide between constructing an Extraction or Industrial District.

Extraction Districts yield more Prefabs but are focused solely on Prefab production. On the other hand, Industrial Districts provide fewer Prefabs but can be switched to produce Goods, offering flexibility if your city's needs change. If you require a consistent supply of Prefabs, prioritize Extraction Districts; if you need the option to pivot production, Industrial Districts are ideal.

Another effective method to gather Prefabs is by demolishing districts that are no longer needed. When a resource deposit is depleted (such as an empty coal mine), demolishing the corresponding district allows you to recover some of the Prefabs used in its construction. This method not only helps recycle resources but also frees up the workforce, which can be redirected to other tasks.

Exploring the Frostland is another way to acquire Prefabs. By sending out exploration teams, you can discover points of interest such as old-world settlements, ruins, and manufacturing facilities that might store Prefabs. These expeditions, while not always guaranteed to yield results, can provide a significant boost to your Prefab supply. Once a team finds a cache of this resource, the Trails mechanic allows them to send these resources back to the city.

Lastly, both Extraction and Industrial Districts offer passive Prefab production. Though slower, these districts provide a small, steady stream of Prefabs each week, which over time can accumulate to meet your city's construction demands. It's a good idea to always have at least one district dedicated to producing Prefabs to ensure a continuous supply.
