#9 Call of Duty 4 : Modern Warfare The Nuke
Call of Duty and its Modern Warfare series has been known for clinch endings and some stunning set pieces that leave us awestruck. The incredible ending to Modern Warfare, for example, is surely not something that you saw coming when you first played the game.
Usually, when a mission like that happens or when there are nuclear weapons involved, the heroes survive through them or somehow manage to stop the blast. In this case, however, you see a more realistic approach when not only you can’t stop the bomb from detonating, but you actually die as a result of it.
This event pretty much unleashes most of the major events in the Modern Warfare series and pushes up the action and drama in a game that felt too familiar from the start but quickly defined itself, and the series, as a stunning shooter.
#8 Castlevania : Lords of Shadow You Are DraculaIn The Future
In Castlevania: Lords of Shadow you fight in order to bring back to life. Through the game, you fight everything, from demons and werewolves to vampires and ancient gods. As you play the game you might be wondering about the absence of a very important character in the whole Castlevania mythology: The Dracula?
In a reboot of one of the greatest video games, you surely can’t leave behind an important character like him. And once the credits rolled you were disappointed to find out that he was nowhere to be seen on the game.
Or so you thought. Because after the credits rolled you’re greeted with a clip that changes everything. And as if you playing as a soon-to-be Dracula wasn’t enough, you’re also revealed than it’s been over a thousand years since the game ended.
So Dracula and Sobeck are in present days, trying to deal with the second coming of Satan, who will try to destroy the earth and have his revenge against you and the Death. Now that is interesting!
#7 Heavy Rain The Big Reveal
Heavy Rain is arguably one of the best-written games with one of the most interestingly twisted plot, in this generation of games. It’s gameplay mechanics and the depressive storyline were appreciated a lot.
The main character, Scott Shelby, is great with children, sometimes, and of course, a fantastic detective who’s chasing after the elusive Origami Killer. Throughout the game, we sympathize with the plight of Shelby, as he chases this horrible killer only to realize that he is that killer and has gone to chasing only his own demons.
This reveal comes as a big shock to the player, because the second you go through the flashback sequence you realize that something big is about to be revealed. Not only is this shocking, but after you witness the reason why he became the Origami Killer you somehow manage to pity feel a bit of pity for the guy.
This is wonderfully played in the game because you never expected to play as the Origami Killer, and how the game shows the missing links between the events, showing the actions he performed, it’s just brilliant.
#6 Assassins Creed 3 You Are a Templar
The first big twist in the Assassin’s Creed franchise happens not too long after you hit the “start” button the first time you play the game. The basis of the franchise goes back to a near-prehistory secret war between the Assassins and the Templar.
The Assassins seek to give the world free will and a little justice while the Templar seeks to control all of it. Hell, they’re even blamed with crucifying Jesus, now that’s a bum rap. So as Assassin’s Creed 3 gets going we’re all set to give pain to the Templars is when we come to know we are one of them, ourselves.
All the trailers showed up the story happening in the crusades, so it was a huge surprise when we found out right at the beginning that the whole thing was a computer simulation & that the storyline of the game is a much more complex one. Well, the gameplay is great but sometimes the storyline just gets in the way. This was a great example of giving the story work in a small, but effective way.
#5 Silent Hill 2 The Video Tape
The Silent Hill series ranks high in the creep-factor of video games and part from being flinchingly scary, it takes the cake for the most disturbing ending with Silent Hill 2. The best word to describe Silent Hill during this game is with the word Punishment.
At first, you aren’t quite sure why he is received by such horrible images the second he walks into Silent Hill. He seems like a very troubled man who really wants to find the woman he used to love. As the game progresses a pattern starts to emerge. Then all makes sense after you watch the tape.
While it is a big reveal to the player, it’s nothing but a reminder of what he did, and why he is dealing with such terrible nightmare – he killed her. Killing the love of his life because she was already dying of a terminal illness, the entire game was his punishment.
The whole town is a punishment for him, and there’s nothing he can do, but to accept the actions he has made. This kind of literary twist is fantastic and gut wrenching when you realize that the entire game was punishment for the player. Punishment he may or may not deserve. These moral ambiguities make the plot twist even more disturbing.
#4 Red Dead Redemption Johns Death
In Red Dead Redemption the protagonist, John Marston, spends the entire game trying to make up for his past wrongdoings. By defusing a war and trying to bring justice to the last outpost of the Wild West.
When you’ve finally completed all our missions and gained the love and lives of Marston’s family is when a posse shows up at his house. As John busts through the doors he starts firing but no matter how many times you replay, John always dies. In a horrible slow death that leaved you shocked and clueless.
But that’s not all! Just when you’re contemplating throwing a brick through Rockstar Game’s office window, you take on the role of Marston’s son for one last glorious shootout and the resolution of the meaning of the game’s title.
#3 BioShock A Man Chooses. A Slave Obeys
BioShock seemed to be a more of a game that is about free will and choice. And then you’re dropped into a dying utopia where the only way out is picking sides in the last days of civil war where everyone’s gone insane. The illusion of choice is brought up again in how you deal with the Little Sisters.
But all that is shattered when we finally meet Andrew Ryan only to discover that the protagonists is the final product of Rapture’s insanity. A killing beast designed and manipulated by Fontaine to do his bidding while you’ve been brainwashed into thinking you’re fighting the righteous fight.
The execution of the twist is magnificent. It left us slack-jawed and instant fans of anything Ken Levine touches. The brutal murder of Andrew Ryan challenges you to break the chains of your slavery as he forces you to kill him knowing it would perhaps free you.
#2 Metal Gear Solid : Peace Walker The Phone Call
Metal gear Solid : Peace Walker is a saga full of twists and turns in which it is really hard to find one that stands above the rest. Well, the game has not one, not two, but actually 5 plot twists that change the way you see the games and the events occurred in it.
And of all those twists, this one is arguably the most important. Not only because this one changes how you look at the actions in the game, but it also makes you wonder what the hell will happen further.
However, despite the significance of the phone-call sequence, only a few people have realized it’s importance, since it requires an insane amount of work to unlock it. It is important to the plot because not only you find out that Miller, Big Boss’ best friend, is working for The Patriots.
And not only that, Solid and Liquid Snake have already born. This is a very important event in the franchise because it means that Big Boss’ story is coming to an end.
#1 Star Wars : Knights of the Old Republic - You Are Darth Revan
