Nobody could have ever predicted that the company that developed Pong, which is considered as one of the most iconic video games of all time, would one day wind up. The legendary company which was founded by Nolan Bushnell, and once counted Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak as its employees, witnessed unprecedented success with its innovative inventions in the field of video games, and was once considered as the fastest growing company in U.S history.

However, Atari sadly succumbed to the North American video game crash of 1983, and was eventually forced to fold. Even though it’s been years since Atari’s closure the company’s work in the field of video games will never be forgotten and will always be a benchmark for current and future video game developers.

#2 Midway

Midway needs no introduction as every video game fanatic knows it as the creator of the iconic Pac-Man game. Originally an amusement game developer, Midway ventured into the world of coin operated games, and soon became one of the most legendary video game companies ever. Besides its greatest achievement Pac-Man, Midway also found success with titles like the Mortal Kombat series, the NBA Jam series as well as the Spy Hunter series.

However all good things come to an end, and Midway fell into debt and finally filed for bankruptcy in 2009. Most of Midways assets are now under the ownership of Warner Bros including the Mortal Kombat series. Despite its closure, Midway’s work will always live on with the company itself carving a permanent niche for itself in the video game universe.

#3 THQ

Every hardcore video game fan is sure to have played at least one THQ game in his or her lifetime as the company was once a huge force in the industry. The American video game developer was the brains behind superb games like the MX vs ATV series, the WWE series, the Red Faction series, and also held the video game rights for numerous productions by Nickelodeon, Disney as well as Pixar.

However the company soon fell into debt, and after several years of difficulties filed for bankruptcy in 2012. The company eventually sold off its assets and wound up in 2013, with Swedish developer Nordic games buying off the majority of THQ’s properties including the rights to publish many of its titles.

#4 Bizarre Creations

The British video game developer initially achieved great acclaim with their innovative titles and can be counted as one of the few top gaming companies to come out of Britain. Bizarre is widely recognized as the developer of the first Formula One game as well as other successful titles like the Fur Fighter series, the Project Gotham Racing series, the Geometry War series as well as James Bond 007: Blood Stone.

Bizarre Creations’ success in the field led to it being acquired by Activision in 2007, however after just five years of acquiring Bizarre, Activision announced that it would be closing down the studio in 2011. The reasons for Bizarre’s closure haven’t been divulged in public, but its former employees stated in an interview barely a few months after the company’s closure that interference from Activision, as well as, poor sales was one of the main causes for the studio’s winding up.

#5 Eurocom

Undoubtedly one of the most successful British video game developers, Eurocom will always be remembered for its superb, innovative games. Some of the company’s many successful titles include the Mortal Kombat series, the James Bond 007 series as well as the video game versions of Batman Begins, Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End as well as Ice Age 2: The Meltdown. Unfortunately Eurocom was one of the many video game companies that fell victim to bankruptcy, and became defunct in 2012.
